Borderlands 4 PC Launch Plagued by Negative Reviews, Players Complain of Poor Optimization
Vladislav Nikolaev
The PC version of Borderlands 4, released on Steam and the Epic Games Store on September 10th, has been met with harsh criticism from players. The game currently holds a "Mostly Negative" rating on Steam, with only 35% positive reviews.
The low rating is primarily due to the poor technical state of the PC port. Players are reporting issues such as terrible optimization, freezes, graphical artifacts, and frequent crashes. Some blame the problems on Unreal Engine 5, the engine used to develop Borderlands 4.
Here's what some players are saying:
"Two crashes in 25 minutes. Thanks, but I'm not going to be a tester for this price. R7 9800x3d + 5080."
"Waiting for a 95% discount on the complete edition with 10 season passes before buying. Absolutely not worth the money right now."
"4 crashes in the first 15 minutes of the game, thanks, no way out, suffering continues."
"7500f + 7800xt in 2K, 70-80 FPS on minimum settings with FSR on quality with dips to 50."
"The fastest refund in the wild west. The worst optimization I've encountered in games in recent years."
"Top-end hardware + 4K = stable 20 FPS. The game is only playable with DLSS on maximum — we get blur, artifacts, freezes and periodic crashes."
Despite the numerous negative reviews, the game has had a strong launch on PC, reaching a peak concurrent player count of over 200,000 on Steam. This is the best launch in the history of the Borderlands series.
According to the system requirements, the game requires at least an Intel Core i7-9700 or AMD Ryzen 7 2700X processor, 16 GB of RAM, an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2070, AMD Radeon RX 5700 XT, or Intel Arc A580 graphics card, and 100 GB of free SSD space. The recommended system requirements include Intel Core i7-12700 and AMD Ryzen 7 5800X processors, 32 GB of RAM, and NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3080, AMD Radeon RX 6800 XT, and Intel Arc B580 graphics cards.
Previously, reviews for Borderlands 4 were released. Critics were pleased with the fourth installment, giving the game a score of 85/100 on OpenCritic and 84/100 on Metacritic. The project was praised for its large open world, engaging gameplay, wide selection of weapons, and pleasing graphics.
