Back in 2022, Borderlands 4 lead writer Sam Winkler posted a viral joke poking fun at the storytelling style of FromSoftware’s games. The meme became so popular that several years later, it found its way into the latest looter shooter as a full-fledged side quest.

As players and journalists discovered, the game features a hidden quest called “Forgive Me” that has no quest markers whatsoever. To start it, players must head into a cave east of a large city, defeat a deranged psycho, and pick up an audio log containing a short message: “Zanzibart... forgive me.”

From there, the player must locate another cave where Zanzibart is buried. Inside waits a mini-boss — the Cursed Myrmidon of the Cruel Dawn. After the shootout, the protagonist tries to make sense of the situation, prompting a mysterious figure to appear and deliver a lengthy, 10-minute monologue explaining the tragic history between Zanzibart and Myrmidon.

The quest is directly based on Winkler’s old tweet, which also mentioned Zanzibart and Myrmidon. After the meme blew up, the writer clarified that he actually enjoys the Dark Souls series and meant no disrespect toward FromSoftware.

Dark Souls revolutionized games, in the sense that instead of a story now you can just have some guy with a big sword named Myrmidon of Loss who gasps "Zanzibart... forgive me" when he dies and then twenty YouTubers will make an hour long video about how deep your lore is.

Borderlands 4 launched on September 11, 2024. You can read our full review here.
