The issue of overheating and melting power connectors on high-performance graphics cards continues to be a concern for users. While there haven't been any major, high-profile incidents lately, a rather unusual solution has emerged as a safety measure. The new device from Germany's Aqua Computer is a compact controller that installs between the power supply and the graphics card. Unlike simple safety devices that just cut power in a critical situation, this adapter works to prevent the problem from happening in the first place.

The adapter's main job is to continuously monitor the load on all six power lanes of the 12V-2x6 connector. If the system detects a current exceeding 7.5A on any single lane, it instantly and automatically redistributes the load to the remaining lanes. This approach prevents localized overheating and potential damage to the connector or cable without abruptly interrupting the system's operation.

All operational data—current, voltage, power for each lane, and temperature—is displayed on a small built-in screen. For more fine-tuning and detailed statistics, users can access the proprietary software, though it's not mandatory. The system allows for customizable multi-level alerts, ranging from a simple blinking LED to smartphone notifications or even a software-initiated GPU shutdown in a truly critical scenario.

Crucially, the core protection features, including emergency shutdown, operate autonomously and can cut power in cases of extreme danger. The device is priced at €80 (plus shipping), with the first shipments expected in mid-November.

Connector meltdowns aren't just a problem for past and current-generation NVIDIA models. A recent incident involving the flagship AMD Radeon RX 9070 XT, which also suffered a melted power cable, clearly shows that the risk persists for any high-power graphics accelerator, especially when used in a less-than-ideal system configuration.
