Hyper Light Breaker Studio Heart Machine Lays Off Staff, Ends Development

Indie developer Heart Machine has announced a new round of layoffs and confirmed that it will end development on Hyper Light Breaker. The news was first reported by Game Developer, though the studio declined to specify how many employees were affected.
The decision comes nine months after Hyper Light Breaker entered Early Access. Released on January 14, the game has received only “Mixed” reviews, with players criticizing its rough gameplay, lack of content, and visual style — which many felt was a step down from Hyper Light Drifter.
Heart Machine previously laid off staff in November 2024, expressing hope at the time that a successful launch of Hyper Light Breaker would allow them to rehire some of those affected. This time, however, the studio cited external factors as the main reason for the cuts.
As we wrap up our work on Hyper Light Breaker, we’ve had to make the difficult decision to part ways with a number of talented team members. This was not our ideal path, but rather the only one available given the circumstances.
While this path will include a conclusion on the project, it reflects broader forces beyond our control, including shifts in funding, corporate consolidation and the uncertain environment many small studios like us are navigating today.
