Hideo Kojima Wants AI to Handle “Routine Tasks” to Speed Up and Cut Costs in Game Development

Hideo Kojima, the game designer behind the Death Stranding and Metal Gear Solid series, has revealed that he’s interested in using artificial intelligence to take care of “routine tasks” in order to reduce both the time and cost involved in game development.
In a recent interview, Kojima emphasized that he doesn’t see AI as a replacement for the creative process, but rather as a collaborator—one that could boost efficiency while he leads the creative side of development. By “routine tasks,” Kojima is likely referring to things like lip-syncing for different languages.
A lot of people use AI in creative work to come up with ideas, but I think of AI as more of a friend ... I would lead the creative part and use AI to boost efficiency. I'd like AI to handle the tedious tasks that would lower cost and cut down on time ... co-creating with AI instead of just using it.
Recently, more and more developers have been turning to artificial intelligence. For example, the Battlefield 6 team used generative AI during the early stages of development to free up more time and space for creativity. Criterion’s design director, Fasahat “Fas” Salim, also noted that AI is seen as a tool to enhance workflows, not as a replacement for human creativity.
Previously, we also reported on the growing trend of people turning to AI instead of hiring paid lawyers. Meanwhile, the AI actress Tilly Norwood—who some hope will become “the next Scarlett Johansson”—has sparked a wave of criticism in Hollywood.
