Blood for bullets: devs behind Crisol: Theater of Idols explain the horror game’s core mechanic
Eduard Zamikhovsky
During gamescom asia 2025, VGTimes spoke with the team behind Crisol: Theater of Idols — a Spanish first-person horror game where your own blood serves as ammunition.
The story unfolds on the island of Tormentosa, a distorted version of Spain. Players take on the role of Gabriel, a warrior chosen by the Sun God to destroy idols that have mysteriously come to life and begun killing people.
According to Vermila Studios head David Carrasco, Crisol’s key mechanic revolves around using your own blood as a weapon. Players will have to manage this resource carefully, balancing “horror, survival, and action.”
The enemies aren't made of flesh — they're statues made of wood and stone. Regular weapons are useless against them, so the hero uses his blood, transforming weapons into divine ones. Since most enemies don't "drop" anything, you'll have to absorb blood from the bodies of locals you find to recover.
The developer added that the game draws inspiration not only from Spanish folklore but also from Resident Evil and BioShock — “especially Resident Evil 7 and 8, which have first-person view, tough enemies, and oppressive atmosphere.”

Crisol: Theater of Idols has been in development for five years by a 20-person team, with publishing handled by Blumhouse Games. The horror title is slated for release in 2026, and a demo is already available on Steam.
