Gamer Shares How Red Dead Redemption 2 Saved His Life and Helped Him Find Peace

A touching and incredibly heartfelt story recently surfaced on Reddit, reminding us that video games can be much more than just entertainment. A 35-year-old Italian user with the nickname Original_Tower_5654 shared how Red Dead Redemption 2 literally helped him get through one of the toughest periods of his life — battling stage 3 cancer.
I’ve loved this game ever since I first played it. I still remember how blown away I was by how deeply it could make me feel actual emotions. Then, just like what happens to Arthur Morgan, life hit me hard too — out of nowhere I was diagnosed with stage 3 cancer.
According to him, the first few days after the diagnosis were the hardest — fear of the future, pain, and worry for loved ones. In those moments, the only thing that brought him any relief was his favorite Rockstar game.
The only time I could really escape and find some peace was when I booted up the game. That’s when it started feeling like real therapy.
The most grueling test awaited him ahead — a bone marrow transplant and two months in isolation in a sterile hospital room without any contact with the outside world. It was during this period, he says, that RDR2 became his personal window to freedom.
My body was trapped in that little room, while my mind was freely riding across the endless landscapes of RDR. It felt so surreal. Sometimes I’d spend hours just wandering around for no reason, enjoying the scenery, hunting rare animals, or taking pictures of the views.
He even recalls a particular moment — taking morphine for the pain and launching the mission “A Quiet Time” for full immersion.
Hours spent in the world of Red Dead Redemption 2 helped him get through the treatments and made even the toughest days a little lighter. After months of recovery and the transplant, he returned home and shared his story, thanking the community and the anonymous bone marrow donor who saved his life.
Maybe my donor is a gamer too, and somewhere in the world you’re reading this. It’s thanks to you that I can still spend more hours playing this masterpiece.
The post received an overwhelming response, with hundreds of users offering words of support, wishing him health, and thanking him for sharing such a personal story.
It’s fitting that this story comes out now — just as Red Dead Redemption 2 celebrates its seventh anniversary. Over the years, the game has earned hundreds of thousands of positive reviews. For example, it currently holds a 91% rating on Steam. Recently, it also ranked 10th in PC Gamer’s list of the top 100 PC games.
