The Witcher Season 4 Flops: 50% from Critics and 19% from Viewers — Henry Cavill’s Exit Took Its Toll

Season 4 of The Witcher from Netflix premiered on October 30 — and the response has been ice cold. On Rotten Tomatoes, the show currently holds just 50% approval from critics based on 12 reviews and a disastrous 19% audience score from over 50 ratings.
The biggest issue is obvious — Henry Cavill’s replacement by Liam Hemsworth as Geralt. Viewers have largely rejected the new lead, seeing Cavill’s departure as a betrayal by the showrunners, who, according to fans, ignored his push to stay faithful to the source material.
Critics are divided. Paste Magazine praised Anya Chalotra’s performance, while Variety noted that the story feels sharper and less convoluted than in the previous season. But negative reviews vastly outnumber the positive ones.
The Guardian was especially harsh toward Hemsworth.
If his predecessor imbued Geralt with a gruff charm, the new Geralt feels more like “a dresser in a wig” than a noble hero.
TheWrap was even more brutal.
Cavill brought real presence to the role — broodingly funny one moment and convincingly brutal the next. Hemsworth is an anchor that The Witcher can’t free itself from.
Radio Times summed it up grimly: Cavill’s absence looms over the story, and Netflix’s flagship fantasy series has lost its magic. Unless Season 5 performs a miracle, this is a quest even Geralt wouldn’t be able to complete.
Viewers have been even harsher — many are boycotting the show entirely after Cavill’s departure.
Henry was the only one who truly cared about the show and The Witcher universe. After he left, I stopped watching altogether.
Season 5 of The Witcher will be the final one. Given the reception to Season 4, the only question is whether anyone will still be watching by then. Filming has already wrapped, and more information is expected next year.
Earlier, we reported that alongside the new season, Netflix also released a standalone film about the Rats, featuring Dolph Lundgren.
