The iconic Mummy franchise is making a comeback. As reported by The Hollywood Reporter, Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz are in talks to reprise their roles in a new Universal Pictures installment.
The film will be directed by the Radio Silence duo — Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett — best known for Ready or Not and the recent Scream films (2022, 2023). Longtime Mummy producer Sean Daniel will return, joined by Radio Silence collaborators James Vanderbilt, Paul Neinstein, and William Sherak.
The project is described as a direct continuation rather than a reboot. According to sources, it will ignore the events of the third movie, Tomb of the Dragon Emperor (2008), in which Maria Bello replaced Weisz. The script was written by David Coggeshall.
The original 1999 Mummy, directed by Stephen Sommers, blended Indiana Jones-style adventure with elements of horror and romance. It grossed over $422 million worldwide and turned Fraser into one of Hollywood’s biggest stars.
Fraser’s return feels fitting — his career has experienced a major revival following The Whale, for which he won an Oscar. He also stars in the upcoming Rental Family, already drawing strong early praise. Weisz, meanwhile, recently appeared in the series Dead Ringers and Marvel’s Black Widow alongside Scarlett Johansson.
Plot details remain under wraps, but insiders say the new Mummy will “return to the spirit of the original” — full of adventure, mystery, and humor, rekindling the chemistry that made Fraser and Weisz one of cinema’s most beloved duos.
