Christofer Sundberg, creator of the Just Cause franchise and founder of Avalanche Studios, has finally spoken out about the series’ future — and it’s not good news. According to him, Just Cause 5 will never be released. Even if development had started, he said, it wouldn’t have saved the studio, as the issues surrounding the fourth game were simply too severe.

The problems with JC4 partly came from me (reluctantly) stepping away from creative leadership and getting sucked into all that corporate nonsense — publisher issues, team structure, management, and so on. It’s sad, because if you look at JC4 now, you can see how much potential it had.

Sundberg also commented on the recently leaked materials from the canceled Contraband, noting that the idea for the project was first pitched to Microsoft back in 2017 and was approved at the time. Although the game changed significantly over the years, Sundberg added that “it would be great to see it released someday.”

However, a return to Just Cause is impossible, he said, as only a few members of the original team remain. Sundberg explained that Avalanche’s current state simply wouldn’t allow the franchise to continue in its original form.

Just Cause 4 received mixed reviews from both critics and players, holding a 65% positive rating on Steam. Since its release in 2018, it has sold over 1.5 million copies, but declining interest and underwhelming post-launch updates have left the series on the sidelines of the industry.

With that, fans may have to say goodbye to hopes for a sequel — the future of Just Cause now appears uncertain.

Previously, we reported that the open beta for the PC shooter Pioner has begun.
