Naughty Dog Officially Abandons Live-Service Games — Studio Returns to Single-Player Storytelling

After canceling the multiplayer project The Last of Us Factions 2, Naughty Dog has officially decided to return to its roots — creating “character-driven, story-focused games” that made the studio legendary.
In a video celebrating Naughty Dog’s 40th anniversary, co-founder Jason Rubin said:
I hope the future brings more of what Naughty Dog has always done best — high-quality entertainment, stories with depth and meaning.
Studio manager Alison Mori added that the team will continue to “build incredible, character-based games that explore the human experience.”
The decision isn’t surprising: after nearly four years of development, The Last of Us Factions 2 was canceled in late 2023. Initially planned as a large-scale live-service experience, the game was reportedly scrapped because it “didn’t reflect the spirit of Naughty Dog.”
Now, the studio is fully focused on Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet — a single-player sci-fi adventure that’s already being described as “a bold new step for the creators of Uncharted and The Last of Us.”
While Naughty Dog hasn’t ruled out multiplayer features entirely, it’s clear the studio is doubling down on what it does best — cinematic storytelling, emotional depth, and powerful characters.
Earlier, Neil Druckmann revealed that Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet is the company’s most ambitious project to date and offered a small glimpse into its vision.
