Despite high critical acclaim, the looter-shooter Borderlands 4 has struggled to retain its audience. Just two and a half months after launch, the player count on Steam has plummeted by 96%.

At its September launch, the game hit a peak concurrent player count of 304,398 on Steam. In the last 24 hours, however, that peak has dwindled to just 13,533 players. This player exodus is likely due to a lack of new content, as the developers haven't been quick to release major updates or expansions. Additionally, many player reviews complain that the creators have yet to resolve persistent technical issues.

It's worth noting that the game recently received a small thematic add-on, Bounty Pack 1: How Rush Saved Mercenary Day. The first major DLC, titled Mad Ellie and the Vault of the Damned, is scheduled for release in Q1 2026. This expansion will introduce a new playable character, a large new location, main and side quests, legendary gear, and cosmetic items to the shooter.

Borderlands 4 is available on PC (Steam and Epic Games Store), PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S. The Nintendo Switch 2 version has been indefinitely postponed. You can find our review of the game here.
