“Tons of Things in the Works”: Todd Howard Once Again Hints at Fallout 3 and New Vegas Remasters

Amid the explosive success of the Fallout series and Season 2 shifting into the New Vegas setting, fans have been increasingly demanding remasters of the classics — Fallout 3 and Fallout: New Vegas. Bethesda director Todd Howard has finally commented on the wave of requests — and while there are no direct announcements, the hints are becoming clearer.

We see all those comments… we have tons of things in the works, and we look forward to the day we can show them.

The question specifically concerned re-releases of Fallout 3 and New Vegas, which makes the phrase “tons of things” far more meaningful than the usual evasive “we’re working on something.” But according to Howard, fans should not expect early teasers. The executive has repeatedly stated that Bethesda leans toward a “shadow drop” strategy, as with Oblivion Remastered, which launched immediately without a long pre-release campaign. And similar wording has been used regarding Fallout 5.

Howard explains this approach as a desire to restore the feeling of launching a game for the first time:

Overall, I prefer to wait. When you launch a game, you’ve downloaded it, everything’s there, you press “play,” what are you thinking? What do you already know about the game? So I start from that moment and work backward.
— Todd Howard

The idea of relying on players’ memories worked: after its surprise release, Oblivion instantly brought crowds back to Cyrodiil for the first time in nearly 20 years. And Bethesda is confident that Fallout 3 and New Vegas can spark a similar wave of returns.

Incidentally, on December 17 the second season of the Fallout series premieres — and fans are already wondering whether upcoming shows like The Game Awards will offer the first hints at future remasters.

Earlier, Todd Howard even shared which Fallout faction he would join if a real apocalypse occurred.
