Intel Taps New GPU Chief Architect in Bid to Catch Up to NVIDIA and AMD

At the Cisco AI Summit conference, Intel's CEO, Lip-Bu Tan, confirmed a key hiring move designed to breathe new life into the company's ambitions in the discrete graphics market. This involves a new chief architect who will lead the development of new graphics cards. The specialist's name was not disclosed, but Tan noted that it took considerable time and effort to persuade them to join.

Intel is seriously intent on closing the gap with market leaders NVIDIA and AMD. The company's history of attempts to join the discrete GPU race spans about a decade and has yet to yield the desired success. The previous head of the division, Raja Koduri, left Intel nearly three years ago, and since then, the release of new graphics cards has noticeably stalled.

The new architect's focus will likely center on the segment of AI-accelerated GPUs, as these are showing the greatest demand. However, the development of new graphics cards for mainstream users shouldn't be ruled out either. Development is expected to be carried out both by the corporation's own forces and through the integration of technologies from startups it is acquiring.

Intel's CEO also made it clear that immediate results should not be expected. Restructuring and creating competitive products will take years, and the impact of this appointment won't be felt overnight.

In parallel, Lip-Bu Tan addressed the acute problem in the memory market. He called artificial intelligence the main challenge for this industry, which is facing sharp price increases and chip shortages due to soaring demand from AI infrastructure. According to his forecast, an improvement in the situation shouldn't be expected before 2028.
