Nintendo is developing a new version of the Switch 2, but only for Europe
Nintendo appears to be working on an updated version of the Switch 2 for the European market. As the Japanese outlet Nikkei reports, the company is preparing a revised version of the console with a removable battery, along with new versions of the Joy-Con 2 controllers whose batteries will also be replaceable.
The reason is clear: new requirements for electronic devices are coming into force in the European Union. Starting in 2027, all electronic devices must allow for easy battery replacement. That is why the new Switch 2 revision, if the leak is accurate, will debut in Europe first.
Other tech companies have already brought their devices in line with European legislation: for example, Sony updated the DualSense controllers for the PS5, while Apple changed the design of its new iPhones to make battery replacement easier.
Interestingly, Nintendo already has a unique regional version of the Switch 2. Since 2025, the company has been selling a special version of the console in Japan that is roughly $100 cheaper, but only supports the Japanese language and Japanese Nintendo accounts.
The Nintendo Switch 2 launched on June 5, 2025, and in just its first six months, sales surpassed 17 million units, outpacing the original Switch at the same stage. The console got off to a strong start, quickly cemented itself as one of Nintendo’s biggest commercial hits, and once again proved that demand for the company’s hybrid format remains high.
Bridge of Spirits will soon be released on Nintendo Switch 2. The console itself currently ranks second in sales in the U.S.
In your opinion, which of the current consoles is the best: PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, or Nintendo Switch 2?
