YouTube has launched a controversial experiment with its player interface. For some users, the familiar pause button has disappeared, replaced by a “Share” button instead. It’s important to note that this isn’t a global update, but rather a limited test.

The change is only visible to a small group of users selected for the experiment. In this test, playback controls have become less obvious — to pause or resume a video, users now have to tap directly on the video itself. Some interface elements have also been repositioned: for example, the volume control has moved to the top of the player for certain users.

Observers believe the goal of the experiment is to boost engagement and encourage viewers to share content more frequently. However, the reaction has been mixed: many users find the change inconvenient or even annoying, since the basic pause function is now less accessible.
