HoYoverse and the legendary studio MAPPA have officially announced that work has begun on an animated project based on the popular game Honkai: Star Rail.

The first concept trailer, titled Death in the Afternoon, was shown during a special livestream held to celebrate the release of update 4.2 and the game’s third anniversary. The three-minute video features several familiar characters, including Kafka, Blade, Silver Wolf, Firefly, and others.

The project is being produced by MAPPA, the studio behind major hits such as Jujutsu Kaisen, Chainsaw Man, and Attack on Titan. The anime will be directed by Yuzuru Tachikawa, known for his work on Attack on Titan: The Final Season and Steins;Gate, while character design has been entrusted to Kaeko Ishikawa, who previously worked on Chainsaw Man – The Movie: Reze Arc.

The creators have already confirmed that the series will tell an original story set in the Honkai: Star Rail universe. Plot details and the exact premiere date are still being kept under wraps. Fans are already actively discussing the announcement on social media, praising the animation quality and hoping the anime will arrive before the long-awaited Genshin Impact adaptation from ufotable.

In related news, a second teaser for the Genshin Impact anime series by ufotable recently surfaced.
