Meet Kimera — a Hybrid Gadget That's Neither Phone Nor Laptop
Craig Pinto’s latest concept, the Kimera, is a curious piece of tech — not quite a smartphone, and definitely not your standard laptop. Think of it as a sleek, pocket-sized fusion of a clamshell gadget and a retro handheld console. It uses AI, but not in the usual way. Instead of automating your life, it supports the creative process — helping you make games, animations, short films, or interactive projects. The whole idea behind Kimera is to shift your attention away from endlessly consuming other people’s content and back toward making your own — without completely ditching digital tools.
The design is just as unique. It folds like a clamshell: the top half features an OLED screen, while the bottom is a touch-sensitive surface that doubles as a keyboard or control interface. Along the sides, you’ll find microphones, a D-pad, a touchpad, and rear buttons with finger grooves for extra comfort. It’s lightweight too — only 450 grams and just 10mm thick, making it easy to carry around. The battery is said to last up to 10 hours on a single charge.
Kimera is designed for people who want to explore digital creativity but are put off by complex software. Here, AI acts as a creative assistant — suggesting ideas, taking care of the tedious bits, and leaving you in charge of the fun part. The mix of tactile buttons and touch controls gives you hands-on control without getting in the way of your flow. For now, Kimera is still just a concept. The creators are aiming for a starting price of $349, but there’s no word yet on a release date or detailed specs.
