Unreal Engine 5.6 Delivers Major Performance Boost Over 5.4

Epic Games has released Unreal Engine 5.6, bringing significant performance improvements over version 5.4. The new update features enhanced hardware ray tracing, making Lumen global illumination faster and more stable. CPU bottlenecks have also been addressed, allowing for more complex scenes to run smoothly at a stable 60 FPS.
A new Fast Geometry Streaming plugin has been introduced, which speeds up the loading of static objects like buildings and trees. This results in smoother gameplay and faster content loading times.
The PCG (Procedural Content Generation) system has also seen upgrades, enabling developers to more efficiently create and manage large, complex worlds with a focus on GPU performance.
Benchmarks from the Paris Tech Demo highlight the impressive gap between UE5.4 and UE5.6: up to a 45 FPS increase in CPU-bound scenes on identical hardware (i7-14700F, RTX 5080, 32 GB RAM). Frame times are also noticeably more consistent.
It’s worth noting that the demo was simply ported to the new engine version without any additional optimization, suggesting that even greater performance gains are possible in the future. To see the improvements firsthand, it’s recommended to check out the video, especially the 720p tests.
