PS6 Set to Revolutionize Graphics with AI as AMD and Sony Join Forces

PlayStation and AMD have teamed up for Project Amethyst—an ambitious initiative aimed at leveraging machine learning (ML) to push the boundaries of graphics and performance in future games.

PlayStation architect Mark Cerny and AMD head Jack Huynh have confirmed that the project is focused on two main goals:

  • Creating an architecture optimized for ML workloads in gaming;
  • Developing neural networks that will deliver groundbreaking real-time graphical enhancements.

This means the upcoming PS6 won’t just be a more powerful console—it’ll also harness AI algorithms for resolution upscaling, frame generation, and enhanced ray tracing, all with minimal strain on the hardware.

Some of these technologies have already made their way into the PS5 Pro, which uses PSSR (PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution)—Sony’s answer to DLSS. Now, Sony and AMD are taking things a step further with the integration of FSR Redstone, enabling ML-powered frame and ray generation.

There’s also speculation that these advancements could tie into the development of a new portable PlayStation console rumored to support PS5 games, which would require highly efficient upscaling and ML optimization.

For reference, technical experts have previously discussed what kind of hardware the PlayStation 6 might pack under the hood.
