Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5: The New Flagship Smartphone Chip is Here
Qualcomm has made its next top-tier smartphone chipset official. In a surprising move, the company is skipping the expected "Snapdragon 8 Gen 4" naming convention and jumping straight to the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5. While the skipped number caught many off guard, Qualcomm was quick to offer an explanation. The company considers the previous "Snapdragon 8 Elite" chip to be its fourth-generation mobile processor, even without a "4" in the name, making this new model the logical fifth generation.
The headline feature of the new chipset is its use of second-generation custom Oryon cores. According to insider information, the CPU configuration will include two high-performance cores clocked at up to 4.61 GHz and six efficiency cores running at up to 3.63 GHz. Graphics will be handled by the Adreno 840 GPU with a clock speed of 1.2 GHz, and the entire chip will be manufactured on TSMC's 3nm process.
One of the first smartphones to feature the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 will be the Xiaomi 17 series. The Chinese brand has confirmed that the lineup, including the base model, Pro, and Pro Max, will all be powered by this new silicon. Interestingly, Xiaomi is also changing its numbering scheme, skipping a "16" model to align the launch of its new devices with the recently announced iPhone 17. It's worth noting that Xiaomi is sticking with Qualcomm processors despite having developed its own smartphone chip, the XRING 01, and already working on its next iteration.
The new chip is also expected to power the Samsung Galaxy S26 series. For its Korean partner, Qualcomm is likely to prepare a special "for Galaxy" version with deeper optimization and potentially higher clock speeds, as it has done in the past. Full details on the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5's performance and efficiency will be revealed this fall at Qualcomm's annual Snapdragon Summit.
The new Qualprocessor is poised to be the most powerful mobile chip on the market, though, alas, not the most affordable. Like all of its predecessor flagship chips, it will be destined for premium-tier devices.
