YouTube Supercharges Live Streams with Dual-Format Broadcasting and Mini-Games
YouTube has introduced a significant set of new features for its Live service, marking one of the platform's most substantial updates ever. The headline innovation is the ability to broadcast simultaneously in two formats: horizontal for viewers on PC and TV, and vertical for smartphone users. A unified live chat across both formats will help creators bring their entire audience together.
Additionally, YouTube has integrated mini-games (Playables) directly into streams. Creators can now launch popular games like Angry Birds Showdown or Trivia Crack during a broadcast to mix up the interaction with their audience. This feature is also seen as an easy way for new streamers to get started, using gameplay as their primary content.
A new tool focused on mobile viewers allows creators to launch a vertical stream and provide real-time commentary on other broadcasts or events — a format highly popularized by TikTok. The platform is also leveraging AI for new enhancements. The system can now automatically analyze a live stream recording and suggest creating clips of the best moments for YouTube Shorts.
For new creators, a "Rehearsal Mode" has been added to test audio and video without the risk of accidentally going live. The update also brings monetization changes, including a new ad format that displays next to the main video instead of interrupting it. Furthermore, channels with paid memberships now have a simplified tool for making their streams members-only.
These updates are designed to help content creators reach a wider audience and make producing live video easier, especially as more viewers watch streams from their smartphones. The new features will roll out gradually over the coming months, promising significant changes to the platform's functionality.
Previously, YouTube launched a feature for automatically dubbing videos. The new technology supports 30 languages, with plans to expand its language support in the future.
