HONOR's New Concept: A Smartphone with a "Living" Camera

At its Magic8 series launch event, HONOR introduced a striking new concept: the Robot Phone. While still just a prototype, this device could potentially redefine mobile photography thanks to its key feature—a camera on an autonomous robotic arm.

Unlike conventional smartphones, the Robot Phone's camera is mounted on a miniature, folding mechanism that resembles an arm. It can independently, without user input, unfold, choose a direction to shoot, and retract back into the body. This approach opens up new possibilities for finding unique angles that were previously impossible due to the static nature of cameras built directly into a phone's frame.

Visually, the concept appears bulkier than standard models. The camera's movement mechanism is reminiscent of compact action camera gimbals, positioning it as a more advanced solution compared to past market experiments, like the ASUS Zenfone 6 with its flip-up module, which remained static and couldn't adjust its shooting angle.

According to HONOR representatives, they see this device not just as a gadget, but as a companion capable of adapting to the owner's needs for capturing memorable shots. There's no word yet on when the Robot Phone might transition from a digital concept to a real product. More detailed information about the project is promised for Spring 2026 during MWC 2026.

While HONOR still has to bring its ambitious concept to consumers, the trend for smartphones with unconventional cameras is already gaining real-world traction. A prime example is the compact iKKO MindOne, which recently and successfully raised over $1.2 million on Kickstarter. Its standout feature is a 50 MP rotating camera that swivels 180 degrees, serving as both the main and front-facing shooter.
