Apple Confirms Partnership With Google: New Siri Features Will Be Powered by Gemini
Apple has officially confirmed its partnership with Google, under which Gemini models will be used for future Siri features and the broader Apple Intelligence ecosystem. Apple shared the confirmation in a statement to CNBC.
After careful evaluation, we concluded that Google’s technologies provide the most powerful foundation for Apple Foundation Models, and we are excited about the innovative opportunities this will unlock for our users.
Google, in turn, stated that the companies have entered into a multi-year agreement. According to the announcement, the next generation of Apple Foundation Models will be built on Gemini models and Google’s cloud infrastructure. These technologies will power future Apple Intelligence features, including a more personalized version of Siri, which is expected to launch within the next year. Apple emphasized that Apple Intelligence will continue to operate on Apple devices and via Private Cloud Compute, while maintaining the company’s privacy standards.
According to CNBC, the partnership is expected to span several years, with Apple using Gemini as a foundation for developing its own models. At WWDC 2024, Apple previously unveiled Apple Intelligence and an updated Siri capable of understanding personal context, performing actions within apps, and analyzing on-screen content, though the launch of this version of the assistant was later delayed.
Confirmation of the deal follows reports by Bloomberg journalist Mark Gurman, who claimed that Apple could be paying Google around $1 billion per year for access to Gemini models. It was also reported that the new version of Siri would run on a model with roughly 1.2 trillion parameters. Neither company has officially disclosed the technical or financial details of the agreement.
Previously, we reported that the fourth version of China’s DeepSeek is expected to launch soon, promising strong programming capabilities and the potential to outperform competitors.
