VR Work is About to Get Easier: Meta Quest 3 to Feature a Desk-Projected Keyboard
Meta has begun trialing a new feature for its Quest 3 mixed-reality headset that could change how we work in virtual environments. It involves virtual input tools called Surface Keyboard and Surface Touchpad, which are projected onto any flat surface. This feature, currently in public beta testing, allows users to transform a desk or other plane into an interactive area. The system relies on the headset's cameras to track hand positioning.
A major issue with VR work has been the awkwardness of text input. Existing virtual keyboards that float in mid-air lack tactile feedback and quickly tire users out. Meta's new solution seeks a compromise by allowing users to mimic the familiar hand position of typing on a desk.
However, the practical usefulness of a virtual touchpad raises some eyebrows. For many VR users, gesture-based navigation directly in the air often proves more intuitive than sliding a finger across a virtual area on a desk.
On social media, Meta Reality Labs designer Yoon Park demonstrated how the new feature can be used to work with web pages and Microsoft Word documents. The video shows scrolling and navigation controlled by gestures on the desk surface.
At this stage, the feature is available exclusively for the Meta Quest 3 and is not rolling out to other company headset models. Official release dates for a stable version of the update have not been announced. This development highlights Meta's ongoing efforts to adapt mixed-reality headsets not just for gaming, but for productive work as well.
