Is AI Video No Longer a Luxury? Google Releases the Most Affordable Model in Its Veo Lineup

Google has announced a new AI video generation model — Veo 3.1 Lite. The new model is positioned as the most cost-effective solution in the Veo 3.1 lineup, designed for developers who need to handle large volumes of video content without significant expense.

Veo 3.1 Lite sits at the bottom of the family hierarchy: the standard Veo 3.1 remains the flagship, while the Fast version occupies the middle ground. The new model delivers the same generation speed as Veo 3.1 Fast but costs more than 50% less. The model supports Text-to-Video and Image-to-Video formats and resolutions of 720p or 1080p, in both horizontal (16:9) and vertical (9:16) aspect ratios. There’s also the option to choose a duration: 4, 6, or 8 seconds.

The model is already available to developers on a paid basis through the Gemini API and Google AI Studio. Additionally, the technology is integrated into several products within the Google ecosystem, including YouTube Shorts, Google Photos, Google Vids, and the Flow video editor, as well as being accessible in the Gemini app.

It's worth noting that on April 7, the company will also lower the price for using the Veo 3.1 Fast model, making these video generation tools even more accessible. Google representatives emphasize that the release of Veo 3.1 Lite is not the final stop for this direction, and the company states that it intends to continue expanding the availability of video generation technologies for developers. Speaking of which, the company recently launched an AI whose speech is almost impossible to distinguish from a real person’s.

This move seems logical given the broader trend: competition in the AI video generation space is heating up, and developers are looking for a balance between output quality and cost-effectiveness for mass adoption. Meanwhile, one major player has even exited the market.
