Samsung Looks Ready to Ditch Classic TWS Earbuds for a Whole New Format

Samsung is preparing new wireless earbuds, the Galaxy Buds Able, with an open design. Unlike conventional models, the new device won’t be inserted into your ear — and according to Korean sources, the company is betting on a clip-style form factor: the earbuds will attach to the outside of your ear, keeping your ear canal open to ambient sounds.

These kinds of devices don’t block out the outside world and are aimed at users who need to stay aware of their surroundings. This segment is already being actively developed by Huawei, Sony, Bose, and other manufacturers, and now, if leaks are anything to go by, Samsung is about to jump in too. According to available info, the Galaxy Buds Able will use air conduction rather than bone conduction — inside the device, there will be standard drivers placed near the ear canal, not vibration modules that transmit sound through the skull. This approach usually delivers more familiar-sounding music, though the open design traditionally lags behind classic “plug” style buds when it comes to bass and noise isolation.

The main idea behind such devices is to reduce ear strain during long listening sessions and to do away with a tight in-canal fit. Leaks also suggest that the Galaxy Buds Able are being positioned as a comfortable option for all-day wear, and the open design could be useful for those who frequently use earbuds for calls, background music listening, or working with voice assistants. Google and Samsung recently showed off smart glasses that work on a similar principle.

For Samsung, this is essentially their second attempt at breaking into the niche of unconventional open TWS earbuds. The company previously released the Galaxy Buds Live, which got a mixed reaction from users. Back then, people criticized them for their compromise fit and weak passive noise isolation. Now, the market for this type of earbud has grown significantly, so the new model may have a better shot at establishing itself in the category.

Full specs for the Galaxy Buds Able haven’t been revealed just yet. Battery capacity, support for active noise cancellation, and the launch date are still unknown. However, sources claim that Samsung doesn’t plan to show off the Galaxy Buds Able at the upcoming Galaxy Unpacked event, which is expected this summer. According to preliminary info, the release could be pushed back to the end of Q3 or the beginning of Q4 2026.
