Xbox Live Just Went Down Globally — Players Locked Out of Even Purchased Games
On the morning of May 29, 2026, Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S owners worldwide ran into a massive failure of Xbox Live services. Issues started around 8:00 AM, leaving users without access to multiplayer, the digital store, and even some games they’d bought digitally. The first reports popped up on Reddit, while Downdetector recorded a sharp spike in complaints — all while the official Xbox Live status page and the support account on X (formerly Twitter) remained unchanged for hours.
Consoles kept showing the message “Connect to the Xbox network” even when the internet connection was working fine. The built-in network test on the consoles showed a paradoxical picture: upload/download speeds and Wi-Fi signal strength were normal, but packet loss hit 100%. The Xbox store was also down, with any purchase attempts failing due to connection errors. On Reddit, the discussion thread racked up over 250 comments in a few hours, with players from the US, Canada, Australia, and Europe confirming the issue was global.
Throughout the peak of the outage, official communication channels were useless. The xbox.com/status page showed no issues, and the Xbox Support account on X stayed silent. The only source of real-time info for users was Downdetector, where reports of Xbox Live problems shot up sharply. Only closer to 10:00 AM time did the complaint graph begin to return to normal, though access may still not be restored in some places.
This is already the second major incident with Xbox Live infrastructure in May 2026. On May 19, services also suffered a multi-hour downtime that affected login and multiplayer features. Back then, Microsoft acknowledged the problems after a few hours and restored server functionality. The current case follows a similar pattern: a delayed official response amid a flood of user complaints, raising questions about the stability of Xbox’s server infrastructure this month.
Even though most services are back online as of midday on May 29, the incident has once again highlighted the vulnerability of an ecosystem where even single-player games can stop working when license verification servers are unreachable.
