ASUS Shows Off New ROG Ally X20: OLED Is There, but No Serious Upgrade
ASUS at Computex 2026 unveiled an updated portable console, the ROG Ally X20, timed to the 20th anniversary of its ROG gaming brand. The device is an evolution of the handheld gaming PC line, but the key changes involve the screen and exterior design, while the core hardware platform remains at the previous level.
The main innovation is a 7.4-inch OLED panel, replacing the 7-inch IPS screen. According to the manufacturer, this should improve contrast and color accuracy compared to current models in the lineup, which use 120Hz displays with VRR support. At the heart of the ROG Ally X20 is an AMD Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme processor with Zen 5 architecture. The chip includes 8 cores and 16 threads, graphics based on RDNA 3.5 with 16 compute units, and an XDNA neural processor with performance up to 50 TOPS.
The device's chassis has been redesigned; ASUS used a translucent material with gold accents, referencing the model's anniversary nature. This design makes the ROG Ally X20 stand out from the standard versions of the lineup, which come in more restrained color schemes. Some specs remain unconfirmed, and ASUS hasn't revealed details on RAM, storage, OLED panel brightness, or battery parameters. For comparison, the current ROG Xbox Ally X comes with 24GB of LPDDR5X RAM, a 1TB PCIe 4.0 SSD, and an 80 Wh battery, but it's unclear if this configuration will carry over to the X20.
The price and release date of the ROG Ally X20 have also not been officially announced. Given that the current ROG Xbox Ally X is positioned at around $1,000, experts expect the OLED version with the updated design to be more expensive.
Can the OLED screen and anniversary design of the ROG Ally X20 truly change the perception of handheld gaming PCs, or will users be waiting for a more serious performance leap in the next generation? Share your thoughts in the comments.
