Intel says Nova Lake will debut on desktops before the data center
Intel said that Nova Lake will reach desktop platforms before it arrives in the data center. The message came from Robert Hallock, Intel vice president and general manager of the enthusiast channel business, who said the company is taking its roadmap very seriously.
Hallock made the point even more directly when he said:
I have a new core. It's coming to desktop first. I mean, I hope enthusiasts do the math about that one, and that's all I'm going to say
His comments underline Intel's focus on desktop users before the new chip reaches server-oriented products.
Intel also said its roadmap is built around a back-to-back product cadence for gamers and desktop users through 2030. In Hallock's words, the company is accelerating for the gaming market and moving faster than it has in product release cadence. The first concrete signs of Nova Lake-S have already shown up in Intel GFX CI logs. According to the logs, Intel is testing at least two desktop configurations: one with 24 cores and one with 28 cores, both running Linux and exposing AVX-512 support.
The 24-core sample reported 24 threads and a 3.4 GHz base clock. The 28-core sample reported 28 threads and a 3.2 GHz base clock, and the 28-core Nova Lake-S desktop package is expected to lead Intel's desktop rollout.
That 28-core DS package is listed for late January through March 2027. For now, the latest takeaway is simple: Intel wants Nova Lake to reach desktop users first, while the data center waits its turn.
Will Intel's desktop-first Nova Lake strategy make a stronger first impression than a server-first launch would have?
