Pearl Abyss releases a browser demo for Crimson Desert through Twitch
Pearl Abyss says the easiest way to try Crimson Desert right now is through a special Twitch page that opens in a PC browser and skips the install step.
Pearl Abyss says the demo is not a full browser version of the game, but it does let players explore a small part of the open world and meet the main character, Cliff. The experience is designed as a quick introduction rather than a replacement for the full game, giving players a chance to get a feel for its world and presentation without committing to a lengthy download or installation.
The company has said a traditional demo was difficult to build because of the number of platforms involved. Using a browser-based format on PC gives Pearl Abyss a way to offer the experience without having to create and distribute separate demo builds across multiple platforms. It also lowers the barrier for players who simply want to see what Crimson Desert is like before deciding whether to buy the full game.
Will Powers, Pearl Abyss' director of public relations and marketing, said the demo loads in about two seconds on a computer, so players can get into it almost immediately. That makes the format considerably more convenient than a traditional demo, which can require downloading several gigabytes of data before players can even start. The near-instant loading is therefore one of the main advantages of the Twitch version.
He also said the session is capped at 20 minutes, which keeps it from becoming a full substitute for the game. The time limit also means players will only get a brief look at what the game has to offer. Twenty minutes should be enough to explore the available area, meet Cliff and get an impression of the game's visuals and atmosphere, but it is unlikely to provide much insight into its deeper systems or overall scale.
In practice, Pearl Abyss appears to be positioning the Twitch demo as a quick way to remove the biggest obstacle between potential players and their first experience with Crimson Desert. The unusual format could make the game easier to try, although the short session leaves plenty of room for players to wonder whether the full game can deliver enough beyond those first 20 minutes.
How much do the browser format and 20-minute limit hurt the appeal of this Twitch demo?
