Specialist Reveals Potential Steam Machine Price

Popular tech content creator Linus Tech Tips set out to determine the potential cost of the compact gaming PC, the Steam Machine. To do this, he built a PC with similar specifications.

According to Linus's estimates, if components were sourced at their lowest historical prices, the Steam Machine's component cost would amount to $602. However, if buying components at current market prices, that cost could jump to $910, or $813 if opting for parts from lesser-known brands. Linus himself projected the Steam Machine would likely retail for $700.

Valve recently commented on the device's pricing. On The Friends Per Second podcast, company representatives stated that Valve doesn't intend to sell the console at a loss — the Steam Machine's price would be comparable to that of a PC with similar specifications.

The Steam Machine will feature an AMD Zen 4 CPU with 6 cores and 12 threads, an AMD RDNA 3 GPU with 8GB of DDR6 VRAM, 16GB of DDR5 RAM, and either a 512GB or 2TB NVMe SSD. Previously, Valve stated that it doesn't plan to release a more powerful Pro version of the Steam Machine in the near future. Before that, an expert suggested a price point at which Valve's new device could become a hit.
