The Best Games for Low-End PCs and Laptops

Even if your computer or laptop can't handle demanding new releases, that's no reason to give up on gaming. In this roundup we've gathered 85 of the best games for low-end PCs and laptops — titles that will run on a system with integrated Intel HD/AMD Vega graphics, 4–8 GB of RAM, and a dual-core processor. Inside you'll find both proven classics and fresh indie hits of 2024–2026: Slay the Spire 2, Vampire Crawlers, Hollow Knight: Silksong, Hades 2, Balatro, R.E.P.O., and other projects that don't require top-end hardware. The games are split by genre — shooters, RPGs, strategy, survival, and indie — and arranged from the newest to the classics, with detailed descriptions and system requirements. The list is updated regularly.

What we consider a low-end PC today

By today's standards, low-end systems include computers with 4–8 GB of RAM, dual-core processors, and no discrete graphics card (using integrated Intel UHD or AMD Vega graphics instead). Every game on our list has been checked for compatibility with hardware like this and doesn't require top-tier components. Keep in mind that many modern handheld PCs like the Steam Deck are noticeably more powerful than budget laptops and home computers, so we've put together a separate roundup of the best games for Steam Deck, Asus ROG Ally, and Lenovo Legion Go for those.

Shooters and Action Games

Many people think the FPS genre (first-person shooters) is the exclusive domain of powerful gaming rigs. That's a dangerous misconception. The engines of the mid-2000s and early 2010s (such as Source, Unreal Engine 3, and the Fox Engine) were built with a wide audience in mind. They scale beautifully, delivering high frame rates even on office laptops. A high frame rate is critical for shooters, since the smoothness of the image directly affects your aim and reaction speed.

Hyper Light Drifter

An isometric action-adventure from Heart Machine with pixel graphics in the style of the 16-bit era and an atmospheric soundtrack. Hyper Light Drifter tells the wordless story of a drifter exploring a ruined world and battling his own illness. The combat is fast and tactical: dashes, swords, ranged weapons, and instant death from a couple of hits. The game weighs less than a gigabyte and absolutely flies on any integrated graphics — a real example of how engine limitations were turned into a style. It holds around 94% positive reviews on Steam and is considered one of the genre's benchmarks.

  • Year: 2016. Genre: Isometric action / Adventure. Co-op: Local two-player (Special Edition). Rating: 94% (Steam).
  • Hardware: 4 GB RAM, 256 MB graphics card (DirectX 10).

Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain

A technical triumph from Kojima Productions. Despite its modern visuals, the Fox Engine is one of the most optimized engines in history. The game offers a vast open world across Afghanistan and Africa, where you're free to complete missions in a hundred different ways. You can storm a base head-on in a tank, sneak in at night using stealth and tranquilizers, or outwit enemies entirely with cardboard boxes and traps. Developing your own Mother Base adds strategy elements, pushing you to recruit soldiers right off the battlefield. If your PC can handle mid-tier games, MGS V will be the best spy action title for you.

  • Year: 2015. Genre: Stealth action / Open world. Co-op: No. Rating: 91%.
  • Hardware: 4 GB RAM, GTX 650-level graphics card.

Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag

"Black Flag" is still one of the best games about buccaneers. It has naval battles with cannon fire and boarding actions, fort assaults, and duels with especially powerful ships. To come out on top of its many clashes, you need to upgrade your vessel, fit sturdier plating and additional cannons. And it's all steeped in pirate romance, with cheerful sailor songs (shanties) and a sense of absolute freedom. As a result, the project can appeal even to those indifferent to the Assassin's Creed series.

  • Year: 2013. Genre: Action. Co-op: Yes. Rating: 92%.

Borderlands 2

Many fans consider Borderlands 2 the best in the series. It combines looter-shooter gameplay — shooting and an endless hunt for more powerful weapons — with the series' signature humor and pleasant cel-shaded graphics that resemble a comic book and work great even on old processors. There's also open-world exploration, characters with different abilities, and skill progression. And the game really shines in co-op.

  • Year: 2012. Genre: FPS, RPG. Co-op: Yes. Rating: 91%.

Far Cry 3

Far Cry 3 perfected all the key ideas of the second game. The result is a large open world with plenty of activities, from capturing outposts to fishing, a pleasant tropical-paradise atmosphere, and Vaas, the most charismatic villain in the series. Despite its open locations, the game balances the load between CPU and GPU well, so it runs great even on weak machines. And if you've finished it and want more, we strongly recommend checking out the Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon expansion, inspired by 80s action movies.

  • Hardware: 2 GB RAM, NVIDIA GeForce 8800 or ATI Radeon HD 2900-level graphics card (512 MB).

Max Payne 3

Debates periodically resurface online over whether Max Payne 3 is a worthy threequel. It really does differ from the first two games in mood and storytelling. But we'd point out that it's built on solid gunfight mechanics, with bullet time, well-crafted ballistics, and rather accurate enemies, especially on higher difficulty. The project also deserves praise for its atmosphere of dark, brutal noir set against sunny Brazil, and for excellent stutter-free optimization from Rockstar.

  • Year: 2012. Genre: Third-person action. Co-op: No. Rating: 88%.

Sleeping Dogs: Definitive Edition

This is an undeservedly forgotten gem in the open-world crime action genre. You play as Wei Shen, an undercover cop who infiltrates a Hong Kong triad. Instead of simply copying GTA, the developers focused on brutal hand-to-hand fights in the style of John Woo action films and spectacular chases. You'll use the environment — from phone booths to fans — to deal with thugs. Nighttime Hong Kong, with its neon signs and rain, looks stunning even on low graphics settings, and the game runs extremely stably on old hardware.

  • Year: 2012. Genre: Open world / Action. Co-op: No. Rating: 91%.
  • Hardware: 4 GB RAM, GT 440 / Intel HD 4000 graphics.

Just Cause 2

Another take on the GTA formula, this time with a huge archipelago as the setting and insane stunts. Thanks to the grappling hook and parachute, you can latch onto planes, fall from enormous heights, suspend enemies, or tie them to passing cars. Just Cause 2 also has drivable armored vehicles and aircraft that let you tear apart enemy bases with rockets. And all of it runs even on mid-range graphics cards.

  • Year: 2011. Genre: Action. Co-op: No. Rating: 91%.
  • Hardware: 2 GB RAM, NVIDIA GeForce 8800 or ATI Radeon HD 2600 Pro-level graphics card (256 MB).

L.A. Noire

Because of its gunfights and drivable cars, the game can be mistaken for a GTA clone. But that would be wrong. At its core, L.A. Noire is a detective game. You'll conduct investigations, examine clues, question witnesses, and then try to assemble the scattered facts into a single picture and identify the criminal. Special attention is paid here to facial animation — it lets you tell when a suspect is lying. Though it's also possible he's simply nervous or hiding personal information unrelated to the crime. Notably, this unique technology doesn't stop the game from running even on weak processors.

  • Year: 2011. Genre: Action, detective. Co-op: No. Rating: 89%.
  • Hardware: 2 GB RAM, GeForce 8600 GTS or Radeon HD 3850-level graphics card (512 MB).

Saints Row: The Third

In the opinion of many players, the third installment of the wild Saints Row series turned out to be the best. Essentially, it's GTA without a single drop of seriousness, but with utterly absurd missions, genuinely funny jokes, and concentrated trash. Air-dropping tanks and flying fighter jets here go hand in hand with the option to beat enemies with a rubber dildo. If you want something weird and unusual, give it a try. And playing Saints Row: The Third in co-op is far more fun than going solo.

Mafia 2

A worthy successor to the first "Mafia," with the charismatic Vito Scaletta in the lead. Mafia 2 perfectly conveys the spirit of its eras, showing the difference between the wartime forties and the slightly more relaxed fifties, and depicting the realities of organized crime back then. You're in for tense shootouts, frantic chases in vintage cars, and the thick atmosphere of mid-20th-century America. It's felt most vividly at the very start, when you arrive in a wintry Empire Bay.

  • Year: 2010. Genre: Action. Co-op: No. Rating: 95%.
  • Hardware: 1.5 GB RAM, NVIDIA GeForce 8600 or ATI HD 2600 Pro-level graphics card (512 MB).

Left 4 Dead 2

A co-op shooter in which four survivors fight against zombies. Among the undead there are both ordinary enemies that attack in crowds and special monsters that act as bosses. In multiplayer, players can take control of these and try to kill the gun-wielding humans. Both the co-op and multiplayer modes of Left 4 Dead 2 hold up great even today and deliver a ton of fun, especially with friends.

  • Year: 2009. Genre: FPS. Co-op: Yes. Rating: 97%.
  • Hardware: 2 GB RAM, NVIDIA GeForce 6600 or ATI X800-level graphics card (128 MB).

Prototype

This game lets you become a mutant superhero with distinct abilities — for instance, he can absorb other people and take on their appearance. The protagonist of Prototype can also tear apart armored vehicles with his bare hands, hurl huge objects at enemies, and run up buildings at great speed. All of it is combined with an open world and destructibility on a scale that still impresses today.

  • Year: 2009. Genre: Action. Co-op: No. Rating: 85%.
  • Hardware: 1 GB RAM, NVIDIA GeForce 7800 GTX or ATI Radeon HD X1800-level graphics card (256 MB).

Serious Sam HD: The First Encounter

A remaster of the classic 2001 shooter. It has no complex plot or fleshed-out characters — just battles against thousands of bizarre aliens set in Ancient Egypt. You're invited to wipe out the invaders with an impressive arsenal that includes everything from a shotgun and a Thompson submachine gun to a giant ship's cannon firing uranium-enriched cannonballs. Serious Sam HD: The First Encounter is a great option for fans of 90s action games or boomer shooters. And the Serious Engine scales beautifully, delivering the maximum frame rate.

  • Year: 2009. Genre: FPS. Co-op: Yes. Rating: 94%.
  • Hardware: 1 GB RAM, NVIDIA GeForce 7600 / ATI Radeon X1600-level graphics card (256 MB).

The Saboteur

One of the most underrated games of the 2000s. The Saboteur is an open-world action game with car-jacking, set in Nazi-occupied Paris. The protagonist is racer Sean Devlin, who fights on the side of the French Resistance. To battle the occupiers, you can use all sorts of guerrilla methods, from stealthy takedowns to sabotage, explosions, and open firefights. Notably, liberated districts turn to color, while occupied ones stay black-and-white with splashes of red, like in the film Sin City.

  • Year: 2009. Genre: Action. Co-op: No. Rating: 93%.
  • Hardware: 2 GB RAM, NVIDIA GeForce 7800 GTX or ATI Radeon HD 2600 Pro-level graphics card (256 MB).

Bully: Scholarship Edition

A distinctive Rockstar game about school life. You're in for fights at recess, dates with girls, various classroom activities, and building relationships with the local cliques. The project is fairly compared to GTA for its open world and vehicles like a bicycle, a scooter, and a skateboard. But the protagonist, Jimmy, isn't a criminal — just an ordinary troublemaker — so he uses a slingshot, firecrackers, and a baseball bat as weapons. And Bully has an advanced hand-to-hand combat system.

  • Year: 2008. Genre: Action. Co-op: No. Rating: 91%.

BioShock

A shooter from Ken Levine, known for the cult System Shock 2. His game BioShock invites you to descend to the ocean floor and visit the underwater city of Rapture, steeped in Art Deco style and 1930s retro aesthetics. The writer doesn't just tell an interesting story — he raises complex themes, in particular critiquing Ayn Rand's ideas of objectivism and reflecting on society and freedom from state power. But even if that's not your interest, you can take BioShock as an atmospheric game in an unusual setting. It has progression, special powers like burning and freezing enemies with plasmids, and a host of distinctive options, such as turning enemies against each other. BioShock still looks good, yet requires just 1 GB of RAM.

  • Year: 2007. Genre: FPS. Co-op: No. Rating: 92%.

Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare (Original)

It's important to pick the 2007 original specifically, not the heavyweight remaster. This is a classic military blockbuster that set the trend for staging in shooters. You're in for iconic missions, like the stealthy infiltration of Pripyat in ghillie suits and storming a ship in a raging ocean. The game has incredibly low input latency and runs stably even on single-core processors and old GPUs with 256 MB of video memory. The combat dynamics are off the charts, and the variety of situations never lets you get bored for a minute.

Crysis

In 2007, Crysis seemed like the peak of technological progress. That coin has a flip side, though — some couldn't run it at all, others had it melt their computers, and for a third group the game only ran on low graphics settings, so the visual wow factor never materialized. Of course, its picture doesn't blow you away today, but the shooter still looks pleasant. On top of that, it has other strengths — believable physics, freedom of action, a suit with a stealth mode, and drivable vehicles.

  • Year: 2007. Genre: FPS. Co-op: No. Rating: 94%.
  • Hardware: 1 GB RAM, NVIDIA GeForce 6800 GT or ATI Radeon 9800 Pro-level graphics card (256 MB).

S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl

S.T.A.L.K.E.R.'s key strength is the singular atmosphere of the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone. There's also the open world, full of adventures, and the unusual gameplay built around hunting for artifacts, navigating anomalies, and facing unconventional monsters like the invisible Bloodsucker or the Controller, which tries to damage your mind from a great distance. And static rendering lets you run the game even on an office PC. In the opinion of many series fans, the game truly opens up after you install mods.

Team Fortress 2

A team-based shooter from Valve that's completely free to play. You're in for nine character classes, including soldiers, medics, engineers, and spies, plenty of game modes from Capture the Flag to King of the Hill, and the signature cartoon-styled visuals. Team Fortress 2 also has extensive customization of characters, hats, costumes, and weapon skins, and most cosmetic items can be earned through in-game achievements without extra spending. Thanks to constant updates and low requirements, it's a great option for online play.

  • Year: 2007. Genre: FPS. Co-op: Yes. Rating: 91%.

F.E.A.R.

Even though the first F.E.A.R. came out more than twenty years ago, it can still captivate shooter fans. First and foremost, the enemy AI deserves praise — it shines on the highest difficulty. To fight the clone soldiers, you can slow down time. In slo-mo mode, it's especially clear how well-crafted the game's ballistics are. And the spark and dust effects look beautiful even by modern standards. On top of that, F.E.A.R. works as a full-fledged horror shooter, with a grim atmosphere and genuinely scary jump scares.

  • Year: 2005. Genre: FPS. Co-op: No. Rating: 93%.
  • Hardware: 512 MB RAM, RADEON 9500 PRO / 9700-level graphics card (64 MB).

Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas

A legendary game that needs no introduction. Players can explore an entire state with three metropolises and small settlements, plus main and side missions that take several dozen real-time hours to complete. The game was a smart evolution of the ideas from the third installment and Vice City. And if CJ's story isn't enough for you, you have countless mods at your disposal, including both single-player and multiplayer modifications. Notably, Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas is utterly undemanding and will run even on a "toaster."

  • Year: 2005. Genre: Action. Co-op: No. Rating: 93%.
  • Hardware: 256 MB RAM, GeForce4 MX 440-level graphics card (64 MB).

Half-Life 2 (and the Episodes)

Valve's legendary creation, which redefined physics in games back in 2004, is still a benchmark for optimization. The Source engine runs so efficiently that the game delivers a stable 60+ fps even on old integrated graphics chips. You take on the role of Gordon Freeman in a world conquered by the alien Combine. You're in for more than just shootouts — a deep immersion in the atmosphere of dystopian City 17, solving physics puzzles with the gravity gun, and driving vehicles. This is a game where every level is its own genre experiment, from horror in Ravenholm to large-scale urban battles.

  • Year: 2004. Genre: FPS / Sci-Fi. Co-op: No. Rating: 97% (Steam).
  • Hardware: 2 GB RAM, 512 MB graphics card (DirectX 9).

Role-Playing Games (RPG)

The RPG genre is a lifesaver for owners of low-end PCs. Here the priority isn't polygon count but branching dialogue, character progression, and worldbuilding. Open-world games for weak PCs often use optimization tricks like "fog of war" or simplified distant geometry, which lets you explore huge territories without stutters. In these projects you can spend hundreds of hours without noticing graphical flaws behind a powerful story.

Disco Elysium

An isometric RPG with no real combat system, since all the battles play out in the protagonist's head. You'll conduct a detective investigation in an unusual world, search for clues, and talk to witnesses. Though not everyone is willing to talk to a dubious-looking cop. To achieve your goals you have to pass skill checks and hope for luck, since many actions only have a certain probability of success. In that sense, Disco Elysium conveys the experience of a full-fledged tabletop game. That's no surprise, since the game is based on a Dungeons & Dragons campaign.

  • Year: 2019. Genre: RPG. Co-op: No. Rating: 93%.
  • Hardware: 2 GB RAM, GeForce GT 520 or Radeon HD 7450-level graphics card (512 MB).

Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning

A fantasy RPG with dynamic hack-and-slash combat in the vein of what we saw in the God of War series. And thanks to a wealth of active skills, you can tune your hero to your own tactics. The story was handled by writer R. A. Salvatore, known as the author of the Forgotten Realms books. On top of that, Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning has an open world with large cities and a pleasant, sunny atmosphere. Many consider this vibrant game underrated.

  • Year: 2012. Genre: Action RPG. Co-op: No. Rating: 72%.
  • Hardware: 2 GB RAM, NVIDIA GeForce 8800 or ATI Radeon HD 3850-level graphics card (512 MB).

Deus Ex: Human Revolution

Human Revolution is a prequel to the original Deus Ex, a game with a gorgeous black-and-gold cyber-Renaissance style. It can confidently be praised for its excellent story in the spirit of the first game, its thick atmosphere, and its variability. Every level is well optimized and can be completed in many ways, though access to many of them requires certain skills. For example, you can talk to the right person who will grant access, force your way through, or do everything silently. The game is clearly tuned for stealth playthroughs, and in terms of craftsmanship Deus Ex: Human Revolution is no worse than pure-blooded representatives of the genre.

  • Year: 2011. Genre: Action RPG, stealth action. Co-op: No. Rating: 92%.
  • Hardware: 1 GB RAM, NVIDIA GeForce 8600 or ATI Radeon HD 2600-level graphics card (256 MB).

The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings

The second game in the Witcher series (The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings) turned out far larger in scale than the first. It's a mature, eventful adventure of Geralt's in which political intrigue intertwines with the interests of individual people and entire nations. You're in for plenty of main and side quests with their own mini-stories that flesh out Andrzej Sapkowski's fantasy world. The developers at CD Projekt RED dropped the original's unusual combat system in favor of more standard battle mechanics. Notably, on low settings the game runs far more stably than "Wild Hunt."

  • Year: 2011. Genre: Action RPG. Co-op: No. Rating: 93%.
  • Hardware: 2 GB RAM, GeForce 8800 or Radeon HD 3850-level graphics card (512 MB).

Fallout: New Vegas

Many consider New Vegas the best 3D Fallout. Developed by veterans of Black Isle Studios (the authors of the original installments), the game brings back deep political satire, variability, and the influence of skills on dialogue. You're the Courier, who survived a shot to the head and now hunts for the person who wronged you across the Mojave Desert. You'll have to pick a side in the conflict between the NCR, Caesar's Legion, and the mysterious Mr. House. The old Gamebryo engine lets the game run even on laptops with integrated graphics while offering a colossal amount of content.

Mount & Blade: Warband

One of the best games about the Middle Ages, which plays like a one-of-a-kind knight simulator. You'll lead armies hundreds strong, find success on the battlefield, take the head of a faction, and ultimately claim the royal throne. To do that you can use all sorts of methods, from brute force to diplomacy and dynastic marriages. Mount & Blade: Warband deserves praise for its excellently implemented mounted-combat and castle-siege mechanics, which run even on a weak processor.

  • Year: 2010. Genre: Action RPG. Co-op: No. Rating: 97%.
  • Hardware: 512 MB RAM, GeForce FX 5200 or RADEON 9600 Family-level graphics card (64 MB).

Vampire: The Masquerade — Bloodlines

An RPG based on the tabletop Vampire: The Masquerade, which flopped at retail due to its poor technical state. It was brought up to standard by fan efforts, so if you plan to check it out, installing a fan patch is mandatory. The result is one of the best vampire games, with a grim but uniquely alluring world of ancient clans. And not all of these blood-lovers are so creepy — among them you'll find genuine aesthetes too. The game's main strengths are its unusual setting and thick atmosphere.

  • Year: 2010. Genre: Action RPG. Co-op: No. Rating: 97%.
  • Hardware: 384 MB RAM, fully DirectX 9.0c-compatible card with 64 MB of video memory and hardware 3D acceleration.

Dragon Age: Origins

Many RPG fans consider the first game the best in the Dragon Age series. It offered a fleshed-out world, the harsh realities of dark fantasy, varied locations, and genuinely tough battles. The situation is eased a little by the tactical pause, which lets you stop a fight and issue orders to your party. And your decisions directly affect how the story unfolds — both the finale of Dragon Age: Origins and the smaller mini-stories tied to specific characters and locations. If your allies dislike your decisions, they'll leave the party forever. Worth noting separately are the origin stories, unique to each class. For instance, mages start in the Circle Tower, while dwarves begin in the underground city of Orzammar.

  • Year: 2009. Genre: RPG. Co-op: No. Rating: 94%.

Mass Effect Trilogy

An epic saga about Commander Shepard, following the journey from an ordinary person to the savior of the galaxy. The games combine RPG traits with a full-fledged third-person shooter, and your tactics depend directly on your chosen class and skills. Over the course of the Mass Effect Trilogy you'll decide the fates of entire peoples, upgrade your ship, and take part in dangerous missions — in some of which you can lose valuable members of your team. And some exotic alien women won't mind a romance with the charismatic commander.

The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion

While fans wait for the sixth installment and owners of powerful PCs replay a mod-laden Skyrim, Oblivion remains an ideal haven for "weak" systems. The province of Cyrodiil greets the player with lush green forests and the majestic Imperial City. Unlike Skyrim, the guild quests in Oblivion are written far more deeply: to become head of the Mages Guild, you'll have to earn recommendations in every city, and the Dark Brotherhood will offer real detective puzzles. The role-playing system here is more complex, and the magic component lets you create your own spells, which makes the gameplay genuinely distinctive.

Gothic 2: Gold Edition

A harsh old-school RPG that fans of the genre are sure to love. The main thing is getting used to the controls. Once you settle in, you'll see one of the most alive worlds in the industry, even by modern standards. And with the Night of the Raven expansion, you get a long, eventful adventure. Your playthrough will differ slightly depending on your chosen character class. Curiously, this feature appeared in Gothic 2 six years before Dragon Age: Origins. Ideally, the second "Gothic" is best played after the first, which also remains one of the best RPGs on PC.

Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic

Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic makes every list of the most interesting Star Wars games. But it can appeal even to those indifferent to George Lucas's space worlds. It's an RPG in the finest BioWare traditions from the studio's golden age, with a thoughtful story full of unexpected twists, a large open world full of mysteries and riddles, and quality gameplay. Today the game reads as pleasant old-school, but even now it can captivate you for hours.

Strategy, Simulation, and Racing Games

The racing-sim and arcade genre thrives on low-end PCs thanks to excellent engine scalability. Modern racers demand huge amounts of video memory for asphalt textures and reflections, but the classic representatives of the genre use baked lighting and smart shaders that produce a striking image with minimal resource cost.

Slay the Spire 2

The long-awaited sequel to the benchmark card-based roguelike from Mega Crit, released in early access on March 5, 2026, having sold three million copies in its first week. Slay the Spire 2 continues the formula of the first game: five playable heroes (three from the original and two new ones — the Necrobinder and the Regent), hundreds of cards, relics, and bosses, and endless replayability. The big new addition is four-player co-op: for the first time in the series, you can climb the tower together with friends. The graphics remain deliberately simple, and the Godot engine is incredibly lightweight — the game runs literally on an office laptop. The download is just 4 GB.

  • Year: 2026. Genre: Card roguelike / Strategy. Co-op: Up to 4 online. Rating: Overwhelmingly Positive (Steam).
  • Hardware: 4 GB RAM, 1 GB graphics card (DirectX 12), dual-core 2.0 GHz.

Age of Empires 2: Definitive Edition

Anyone interested in realistic strategy games about the Middle Ages with spectacular battles should look at Age of Empires 2: The Age of Kings. If your computer allows, run the remaster, which is balanced for modern hardware; if not, the 1999 original will do. You're in for a few dozen civilizations that journey from the fall of the Roman Empire to the Renaissance. It's important to watch your food supply, research new technologies, gather armies, and build a fleet, then send them into battle.

Slay the Spire

A card-based roguelike from Mega Crit that set the standard for the entire "deck-builder" sub-genre. In Slay the Spire you pick one of four heroes and climb an endless tower, assembling a deck of attack, defense, and ability cards. Every run is distinct; losing sends you back to the start but unlocks new cards and relics. The simple 2D graphics and turn-based gameplay make the game completely undemanding — but it's hard to put down: runs last hours, and it holds 96% positive reviews on Steam. A benchmark for anyone who loves thoughtful tactical runs.

  • Year: 2019. Genre: Card roguelike / Strategy. Co-op: No. Rating: 96% (Steam).

Stardew Valley

A surprisingly cozy farming simulator with pleasant cartoon graphics. You'll raise animals, plant crops, fish, and build. There's no end goal here, but the game always has something to do — for instance, exploring the local mines or assembling a collection of certain items. On top of that, new content comes out for Stardew Valley regularly. If you like, you can do your farming together with friends.

Hearthstone

A digital collectible card game from Blizzard set in the Warcraft universe, which launched the entire digital CCG genre. In Hearthstone you build decks of minion, spell, and weapon cards, choose a hero class, and battle other players or the AI. Matches are fast and the rules are simple at the start, but the meta is incredibly deep, with regular expansions and modes like Battlegrounds (an auto-battler) and Mercenaries. The game is free, runs on any office laptop and even on smartphones, and remains one of the most-played CCGs in the world a decade after release.

  • Year: 2014. Genre: CCG / Strategy. Co-op: No (PvP/PvE). Rating: Mostly Positive.
  • Hardware: 4 GB RAM, 512 MB graphics card (Intel HD 4400+).

Euro Truck Simulator 2

A solid option for anyone who enjoys calm truck drives. It has to be said that this kind of gameplay creates a peaceful mood and can bring genuine pleasure, even without high speeds. At the same time, it's important to follow the traffic rules — watch the permanent and temporary signs and keep an eye on traffic behavior to avoid an accident. If the base Euro Truck Simulator 2 isn't enough, check out the numerous DLCs with extra content. On low settings the game runs even on office laptops.

XCOM: Enemy Unknown

The revival of a turn-based tactics series whose first installments came out back in the 90s. As before, in XCOM: Enemy Unknown we have to defend Earth from bug-eyed invaders reminiscent of the aliens from 1950s films. You need to consider your squad's strengths and weaknesses, study enemy tactics, and use cover wisely. On top of that, you have to manage base construction, recruit and level up new soldiers, and track enemy activity across the planet.

  • Year: 2012. Genre: Turn-based tactics. Co-op: No. Rating: 93%.

Dirt 3

An excellent racer that suits fans of rally and off-road driving. Dirt 3 has not only a beautiful picture but realistic physics — you feel every bump and pothole. Worth singling out is the Gymkhana mode, which involves completing a series of challenges in the spirit of controlled drifts.

Driver: San Francisco

A rather unusual racing-action game in which you can take control of any car in the city. This lets you quickly end a chase — for example, by ramming your pursuer with a truck coming the other way. Over time, though, Driver: San Francisco offers ever more difficult challenges, so you have to use this clever mechanic constantly. Also worth noting are the cinematic staging and the separate tough challenges for racing fans.

Sid Meier's Civilization 5

The Civilization series has incredibly engaging gameplay — you can spend many hours on its matches and the urge to play "just one more turn and then bed," sitting down in the evening and snapping out of it closer to morning. Not every installment, however, met with fan approval. The fifth "Civilization" was well received. The changes from the previous games are targeted — a hexagonal map instead of a square one, no more than one unit per tile, the introduction of city-states, and more. If you want to get into global turn-based strategy games where you manage the development of an entire country and guide it through every era, try Sid Meier's Civilization 5.

The Sims 3

The third installment of The Sims turned out to be a more polished and mechanically deeper game than the fourth, or than the kindred-spirited inZOI. It's a life simulator with a full open world you can move around without extra loading screens. You'll have to look after your Sims, get them jobs, befriend or feud with the neighbors, build relationships with the opposite sex, and not forget about entertainment.

Burnout Paradise

An arcade racer that offers even higher speeds and full car destruction. If you run into another racer in the game's open world and wreck their car, you can take it for yourself. Burnout Paradise generally rewards aggressive driving — it earns you boost, which is critical for winning races. Every collision is shown from the most flattering angles, letting you see exactly what happens to the car during a crash.

Command & Conquer: Red Alert 3

Story-wise, the third Red Alert is tied to the first two, but it can also be taken as a standalone game. It deals with an alternate history in which traveling to the past and killing Albert Einstein created a butterfly effect. As a result, nuclear weapons never appeared, but Japan became a superpower and started a war against the USSR and the USA. The whole thing can be called a comedy that mocks stereotypes about different countries, in the spirit of combat bears, and it's all presented through live-action cutscenes featuring Tim Curry, Jonathan Pryce, and Gina Carano. In terms of gameplay, Command & Conquer: Red Alert 3 is a solid real-time strategy with three different factions whose conflict plays out on land, at sea, and in the air.

FlatOut 2

A racer that'll appeal to anyone who likes wrecking cars. The second installment has you racing through the American backcountry in rusty jalopies, as well as sprinting through city streets in brand-new sports cars. The crashes here are spectacular and quite realistic. FlatOut 2 also has a derby mode where you have to smash your rivals' cars, plus sporting events where you launch your driver through the windshield to hit a target with their body.

  • Year: 2006. Genre: Racing. Co-op: No. Rating: 96%.

Need for Speed: Most Wanted (2005)

One of the best installments in the Need for Speed series, dedicated to street racing and police chases. Beyond the standard race modes, you have to cause damage to the city and destroy cop cars. Naturally, they won't sit on their hands — they'll lay down spike strips that puncture tires, send helicopters into the air, and bring heavier vehicles into the chase that won't be easy to wreck. The story is simple, but it's presented well through live-action cutscenes.

SimCity 4

A city-building simulator that lets you reshape the terrain to get convenient plots for your structures. The metropolis itself can be divided into industrial, residential, and commercial districts, which makes it easier to allocate resources and secure funding. The result is a hardcore but fair mayor simulator. And huge cities don't cause slowdowns even on weak graphics cards. Note that if you like, you can trigger a natural disaster in SimCity 4 — an earthquake, for instance — and watch your city be destroyed.

Warcraft 3: The Frozen Throne

A delightful real-time strategy from Blizzard that can be considered a foundation of the RTS genre. Beyond standard base management and assembling units to attack the enemy, in Warcraft 3: The Frozen Throne it's worth focusing on leveling up heroes, who at max level can take on a whole army. You're also in for four genuinely different races and single-player campaigns for each, united by a single storyline. It has room for betrayal, heroic deeds, and the need to set aside old grudges in the face of a far greater threat. In this writer's opinion, everyone should experience Warcraft 3's story mode.

Stronghold Crusader

"Your treasury is running low, my lord!" — a phrase familiar to almost every strategy fan. Stronghold Crusader is the second installment in the series, dedicated to the Crusades. Compared to the original, the military component grew here thanks to new units, incendiaries, and assassins. And castle-building still plays an important role. A smart defense lets you handle even superior enemy forces. Note that in the arid desert conditions, you'll have to build your economy in a new way — resources are strictly limited, so they must be allocated wisely.

Catherine Ironfist, one of the key heroines of the third "Heroes" story mode
Catherine Ironfist, one of the key heroines of the third "Heroes" story mode

An immortal classic of the genre and the best installment in the series. It's set in the fantasy universe of Might & Magic, home to humans, elves, the undead, the spawn of hell, and elementals of various kinds. In this turn-based strategy, everything is superb — the gameplay, the balance, the art, the music, and the story. Like "Civilization," which we covered above, it can captivate you for hours. The game came out in 1999, so we recommend buying the GOG version and installing an HD-graphics mod with widescreen support. Strange as it may sound, that option is better than the official re-release.

Survival and Sandbox Games

Games in this genre are often made by independent studios that bet on gameplay mechanics rather than photorealism. That makes them ideal candidates for our roundup. Co-op games for low-end PCs let you team up with friends, even if they're on "office" systems.

Hobo: Tough Life

A homeless-survival simulator from the Czech studios Perun Creative and Moravia Tales, which spent four years in early access and got its full release on April 12, 2021. Hobo: Tough Life takes place in the fictional Eastern European city of Praslav, where, after the country's collapse, people ended up on the streets and try to survive a harsh winter. You beg, rummage through dumpsters, steal, do quests for dubious characters, and try to set up at least some kind of shelter. Co-op for up to four players lets you survive on the streets together with friends. A cynical, grim, and unexpectedly addictive game with a large audience.

  • Year: 2021. Genre: Survival sim / RPG. Co-op: Up to 4 online. Rating: Very Positive (Steam).
  • Hardware: 6 GB RAM, GTX 660 / Radeon 7850 (a discrete card from 2012), Intel Core i3-4340 / AMD FX-6300.

Valheim

This game is set in the tenth world, where, according to legend, certain Vikings go after death. They must prove they're worthy of being admitted to the halls of Valhalla. Essentially, it's a survival game with fantasy elements. In Valheim you'll build a house, tame animals, forge weapons and armor, explore various biomes, and fight genuinely powerful monsters. And the stylized low-poly graphics let the game fly on mid-range PCs of years past.

  • Year: 2021. Genre: Survival. Co-op: Yes. Rating: 92%.
  • Hardware: 8 GB RAM, GeForce GTX 950 or Radeon HD 7970-level graphics card (2 GB).

Subnautica

An unusual survival game in which you actively explore the underwater world of another planet. So it's important to watch your oxygen level and return to the surface or to your submarine, which serves as a mobile base, in time. The ocean holds various biomes with their own fauna, both peaceful and aggressive. As is often the case, the more dangerous a location's inhabitants, the more valuable the resources you can find there. The result is one of the most atmospheric adventures of the decade.

This War of Mine

A heavy but important game that asks us to survive in wartime conditions. The protagonist is a civilian who has to provide for himself and those who ended up under the same roof with everything they need, including food, water, and medicine. Over time, other survivors — and looters — try to get into your home. And This War of Mine has an element of randomness — the same characters may behave differently on a repeat playthrough.

Don't Starve

An atmospheric survival game that visually resembles Tim Burton's films. By day you'll gather resources, talk to other characters, and eat; by night, try not to die in pitch darkness. The protagonist can be killed by monsters, freezes in the cold, and goes mad with terror. So in Don't Starve it's important to watch your health, hunger, and sanity. And the difficulty gradually ramps up, so players have to keep changing tactics and devising new schemes to stay alive. Thanks to its low hardware requirements, the game will run even on a weak laptop.

  • Year: 2013. Genre: Roguelike, survival. Co-op: No. Rating: 97%.

Project Zomboid

Perhaps the most realistic zombie-apocalypse simulator. It's a survival game with an isometric camera set during a zombie apocalypse. Beyond finding food, it's important to pay attention to entertainment, otherwise the hero will fall into depression. The game doesn't limit your methods — you can loot your neighbors or fortify your home into a real fortress. But keep in mind that over time the situation only worsens: the dead start attacking more often, and the power goes out. So in Project Zomboid it's wise to prepare for trouble in advance, find and start generators, set up rainwater collection, and plant crops to serve as a food source. And the isometric camera saves your PC's resources.

  • Year: 2013. Genre: RPG, survival. Co-op: Yes. Rating: 94%.

Terraria

This 2D sandbox with thousands of items is sometimes called a two-dimensional version of Minecraft. There is a real resemblance between the games. But they differ from each other in more than just the presence of a third dimension. Terraria bets not on building but on adventure. You'll explore various biomes, hunt for valuable resources, craft, and fight mobs. Every location has genuinely tough bosses. Thanks to decent AI and a large number of available abilities, they can challenge players. Note that the simple visuals let the game run on anything.

  • Year: 2011. Genre: Sandbox. Co-op: Yes. Rating: 96%.
  • Hardware: 512 MB RAM, GeForce 8500 GT or Mobility Radeon HD 3650-level graphics card with 128 MB of memory, DirectX 9.0c and Shader Model 2.0 compatible.

Minecraft

A managed sandbox with no story or specific goal. The main thing is to survive, and for that you'll have to build a house to serve as shelter, hunt for valuable resources, hunt, and tame animals. Many players use the game as a platform for creative ideas — recreating famous buildings, for example. If the project interests you, we recommend installing mods for Minecraft, which either simply improve it or change it beyond recognition. And the OptiFine mod will let the game run even on weak processors.

Garry's Mod

A peculiar sandbox built on the Source engine. In Garry's Mod you can take part in thousands of game modes and create your own. Many of them make active use of realistic physics, which forms the basis for puzzles. Some users use the project to create their own content — making films, for example.

Indie Hits That Run on Anything

Vampire Crawlers: The Turbo Wildcard from Vampire Survivors

A Vampire Survivors spin-off from Luca "poncle" Galante and Nosebleed Interactive, released April 21, 2026 and immediately granted Steam Deck Verified status. Vampire Crawlers is a turn-based card-based first-person dungeon crawler where familiar characters and weapons from Vampire Survivors turn into a deck of cards. Every run is an expedition through procedurally generated dungeons where you build combos from cards, relics, and upgrades. The game weighs about 1 MB, holds 95% positive reviews on Steam, and scores 82–89 on Metacritic depending on the platform. It runs on literally anything.

  • Year: 2026. Genre: Card roguelike / Dungeon crawler. Co-op: No. Rating: 95% (Steam), Metacritic 82–89.
  • Hardware: 4 GB RAM, any integrated graphics, Steam Deck Verified.

Abiotic Factor

An unusual survival game inspired by the first Half-Life. The graphics, visual style, atmosphere, and some weapons and monsters — many elements call to mind Valve's cult shooter. But the gameplay in Abiotic Factor is different, tuned for co-op play, with crafting, progression, and Metroidvania elements. Enemies are strong and numerous, so you often have to improvise, use traps, or look for workarounds. A great option for anyone who's nostalgic for 90s shooters and loves playing co-op games on PC.

Hades 2

The first sequel in the history of Supergiant Games — the studio known for Bastion, Transistor, Pyre, and the original Hades. The game left early access on September 25, 2025 and immediately earned scores around 10/10 from IGN and GameSpot. The protagonist is Melinoë, the immortal Princess of the Underworld and Zagreus's younger sister, who must defeat the Titan Chronos. The gameplay develops the ideas of the first game: new weapon types, an expanded system of patron gods, and two intersecting fronts — Olympus and the Underworld. Hades 2's graphics are beautiful, but the isometric hand-drawn style and undemanding engine let the game run great on modest hardware.

  • Year: 2025. Genre: Action roguelike / Action RPG. Co-op: No. Rating: Overwhelmingly Positive (Steam).
  • Hardware: 8 GB RAM, AMD Radeon R7 360 (from 2015), dual-core 2.4 GHz. The RAM requirement sits at the upper edge of low-end configurations.

Hollow Knight: Silksong

The sequel to the cult Hollow Knight, which fans waited more than six years for. Hollow Knight: Silksong came out September 4, 2025 from the Australian studio Team Cherry and instantly became the year's biggest Metroidvania release. This time you play as Hornet — a swift and far more agile heroine than the Knight from the original. The action moves to the new kingdom of Pharloom, ruled by silk and song. The game uses the same Unity engine as the first installment, and the system requirements stayed just as low: it runs even on decade-old office laptops and got Steam Deck Verified before release.

  • Year: 2025. Genre: Metroidvania / Platformer. Co-op: No. Rating: Overwhelmingly Positive (Steam).
  • Hardware: 4 GB RAM, GeForce 9800 GT (1 GB VRAM), Intel Core 2 Duo E5200.

R.E.P.O.

A 2025 co-op horror from semiwork, a spiritual successor to Lethal Company. Up to six players work for a corporation collecting valuables in abandoned buildings full of monsters. The main hook of R.E.P.O. is realistic physics for fragile objects: a vase will shatter not only from a monster's blow but from a teammate's careless step, which turns every mission into a comedic nightmare with screaming in voice chat. The game spread across Twitch and YouTube in the first weeks after release, holds over 96% positive reviews, and runs on surprisingly modest hardware.

  • Year: 2025. Genre: Co-op horror / Physics comedy. Co-op: Up to 6 online. Rating: 96% (Steam).
  • Hardware: 8 GB RAM, GTX 1050 (recommended; runs on weaker too).

Balatro

A card-based roguelike from solo developer LocalThunk that became the biggest indie discovery of 2024 and collected several Game of the Year awards in indie categories. Balatro looks like poker but plays like a powerful puzzle: you build poker hands, and distinctive jokers with special effects turn every match into crafting clever builds. The game weighs about 100 MB, runs on literally any device with a screen, and is addictive for hundreds of hours. On Steam it holds nearly 97% positive reviews — a rare situation for a modern indie.

  • Year: 2024. Genre: Card roguelike / Puzzle. Co-op: No. Rating: 97% (Steam).
  • Hardware: 1 GB RAM, any integrated graphics, Windows 10+.

Content Warning

A great representative of the survival horror genre, with traces of Phasmophobia and Lethal Company. In Content Warning you play as a blogger who visits the Old World, a mysterious place located underwater. The goal is to film creepy monsters and sinister artifacts from the distant past. Your oxygen supply and battery charge are strictly limited, so you have to hurry. Good content brings views and lets you land a lucrative ad contract. And money is spent on improved equipment that makes exploration easier and lets you progress further.

  • Year: 2024. Genre: Horror. Co-op: Yes. Rating: 93%.
  • Hardware: 8 GB RAM, NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 Ti-level graphics card (4 GB).

Liar's Bar

A co-op PvP game about bluffing, lying, and Russian roulette that became a streaming hit in late 2024. Liar's Bar gathers up to four anthropomorphic players in a grim bar for a card game in the "Cheat" vein: your task is to get rid of your cards, but every turn requires you to declare a suit, and your partners can challenge you. Caught bluffing? You shoot yourself with a revolver loaded with one bullet. Simple graphics, voice chat, and a psychological mix make every match unforgettable. The game runs on almost anything and holds "Overwhelmingly Positive" reviews on Steam.

  • Year: 2024. Genre: Co-op PvP / Social deduction. Co-op: Up to 4 online. Rating: 95% (Steam).
  • Hardware: 4 GB RAM, GTX 660 or Intel HD 4000+.

Bread & Fred

A cute 2D platformer with pixel graphics in which players take control of two penguins. They're tied to each other, so to successfully clear all the obstacles and ascend to the summit, you have to act in sync. For instance, in Bread & Fred it's important to use momentum to build a swing and to catch your buddy from falling. Otherwise, you'll both go tumbling down.

  • Year: 2023. Genre: Platformer. Co-op: Yes. Rating: 79%.
  • Hardware: 2 GB RAM, Intel HD 3000-level graphics.
Because both characters are tied to each other, teamwork in Bread & Fred isn't just desirable — it's vital

Cassette Beasts

A Pokemon-like RPG with turn-based tactics and a surprisingly deep monster-fusion system from the British indie studio Bytten Studio. In Cassette Beasts you end up on a strange island where people catch creatures on old cassettes, transform into them in battle, and combine two creatures into a hybrid form right in the middle of a fight. An open world, a great soundtrack, two-player online co-op, and it holds 95% positive reviews on Steam. The official requirements include a discrete GTX 660 Ti, but the developers released a special guide for running it on integrated graphics with a "Low settings" preset — the game runs on integrated graphics too.

  • Year: 2023. Genre: Tactical RPG / Open world. Co-op: Up to 2 online. Rating: 95% (Steam).
  • Hardware: 8 GB RAM, GTX 660 Ti recommended, but runs on integrated graphics with the "Low settings" preset per the developers' official guide.

Lethal Company

One of the best co-op horror games of the modern era. Here you're invited to search for valuable resources on various moons where abandoned factories remain. But local aliens, hostile to uninvited guests, have settled there. Against them you use firearms, as well as turrets and mines. Keep in mind that the monsters are strong, so fighting them requires a joint effort. Procedurally generated locations combined with chaotic enemy behavior make the clashes in Lethal Company unpredictable, scary, and funny all at once.

  • Year: 2023. Genre: Horror. Co-op: Yes. Rating: 95%.
  • Hardware: 8 GB RAM, GeForce GTX 1050-level graphics card (2048 MB).

Pizza Tower

A high-speed 2D platformer in the aesthetic of 90s cartoons from Tour de Pizza. Pizza Tower is a wild love letter to the Wario Land series, with pixel graphics, acid colors, and a tempo that rivals Sonic. You play as pizzeria owner Peppino, saving his establishment from a living pizza tower. The key is combos: the longer you keep a streak going without stopping, the more points you earn. The game is one of the most critically acclaimed of 2023, holds around 98% "overwhelmingly positive" reviews on Steam, and weighs less than a gigabyte.

  • Year: 2023. Genre: 2D platformer. Co-op: No. Rating: 98% (Steam).
  • Hardware: 4 GB RAM, 512 MB graphics card.

Brotato

If Vampire Survivors felt too long, check out Brotato — a sped-up bullet-hell roguelike about a potato wielding machine guns. Each run lasts about half an hour and consists of short waves with a shop between them, where you buy weapons, upgrades, and items. Dozens of characters with different abilities, hundreds of items, and devilish synergies turn the game into a little tactical laboratory. It costs less than a cup of coffee, runs on any hardware, supports local co-op for up to four, and holds 96% positive reviews on Steam.

  • Year: 2022. Genre: Bullet hell / Roguelike. Co-op: Local up to 4. Rating: 96% (Steam).
  • Hardware: 4 GB RAM, any graphics card.

Vampire Survivors

A minimalist bullet-hell roguelike from solo developer Luca Galante that grew from a tiny experiment into one of the most talked-about indie games of the decade. In Vampire Survivors you control only movement: the character attacks on their own, and your task is to survive on an arena of ever-growing monster waves, collecting experience and combining power-ups into chaotic builds. An hour-long match turns into a visual frenzy of thousands of bullets and explosions, all while the game runs on integrated graphics without a single dip. It costs pennies, holds 98% positive reviews on Steam, and became the template for an entire sub-genre.

  • Year: 2022. Genre: Bullet hell / Roguelike. Co-op: Local up to 4 (with DLC). Rating: 98% (Steam).
  • Hardware: 1 GB RAM, any graphics card.

Loop Hero

An unusual hybrid of roguelike, auto-battler, and city-builder from Four Quarters. The hero in Loop Hero automatically runs along a looped route, while you place location cards to spawn enemies, add resources, and shift the balance between risk and reward. In parallel, you build up a camp that grants permanent upgrades. The graphics are simple ZX Spectrum-level pixel art, the game is under 300 MB, and the requirements are almost nonexistent — yet every run feels like a little strategic puzzle with dozens of decisions. It holds 92% positive reviews on Steam.

  • Year: 2021. Genre: Roguelike / Auto-battler / Strategy. Co-op: No. Rating: 92% (Steam).
  • Hardware: 2 GB RAM, any integrated graphics (DirectX 11).

It sounds simple, but in practice you'll need to act together. On top of that, each of the 48 levels has its own distinct puzzles. There are also modes where participants compete against each other. Pico Park supports not only online co-op but split-screen — playing together on a single screen.

  • Year: 2021. Genre: Puzzle. Co-op: Yes. Rating: 91%.
  • Hardware: 4 GB RAM, second-generation Intel HD Graphics-level card (512 MB).

Hades

A quality roguelike that can be counted among the best games about ancient Greek mythology. The protagonist is Zagreus, son of the god Hades, who wants to escape the underworld. But his father dislikes the idea, so he does everything to stop him. In Hades you'll kill monsters over and over in randomly generated locations, improve skills and unlock new abilities, and fight bosses with prototypes from Hellenic myths. Among them, for example, is the charismatic Megaera, goddess of vengeance, who was once Zagreus's love interest.

  • Year: 2020. Genre: Roguelike. Co-op: No. Rating: 95%.

Unrailed!

A humorous railroad-building simulator. You have to manually clear the path, then lay tracks ahead of an already moving train and make sure it keeps going. The difficulty ramps up over time, so teamwork plays an important role. Also worth noting are the train upgrades, procedurally generated worlds, and various weather events that make the gameplay unpredictable.

  • Year: 2020. Genre: Simulator. Co-op: Yes. Rating: 94%.
  • Hardware: 4 GB RAM, Intel HD 520-level graphics.

Broforce

A peculiar parody of classic and modern action movies, made with respect and love. Among the characters you'll find Brobocop, Bro Dredd, Rambro, and other recognizable heroes. You can't help but think of The Expendables — and indeed, the Broforce demo, called Expendabros, is tied to that series. In terms of gameplay, it's a 2D side-scroller in the vein of classic Contra with a destructible environment, where you wipe out enemies by the crudest and most brutal methods possible. Beyond single-player and co-op modes, the game has multiplayer and a full level editor.

  • Year: 2015. Genre: Action, side-scroller, platformer. Co-op: Yes. Rating: 97%.
  • Hardware: 4 GB RAM, GeForce GT 330-level graphics card (2 GB).

Lovers in a Dangerous Spacetime

A humorous action game with pleasant 2D graphics styled after modern cartoons. Together with friends, you have to operate a spaceship — using turrets, lasers, and shields at the right moments to destroy evil monsters. Among them are both small mobs and huge bosses far larger than your starship. As you progress, the levels grow ever more difficult, and you'll find crystals that unlock more powerful weaponry. Learning the controls is easy, but getting all crew members to act in sync is much harder. And without that, you won't be able to overcome the local enemies.

  • Year: 2015. Genre: Action. Co-op: Yes. Rating: 93%.
  • Hardware: 1 GB RAM, NVIDIA GeForce 210-level graphics card (1 GB).

Sven Co-op

A mod for the first Half-Life that launched as a standalone project in 2016. It uses the mechanics of Valve's classic shooter and familiar aliens with slightly altered abilities. Here, for instance, vortigaunts can resurrect fallen comrades. But the action of Sven Co-op isn't confined to Black Mesa — there are locations inspired by World War II, the modern day, or sci-fi settings. A great choice for anyone feeling nostalgic for 90s shooters.

  • Year: 1999 (as a mod), 2016 (as a standalone game). Genre: First-person shooter. Co-op: Yes. Rating: 92%.
  • Hardware: 512 MB RAM, Intel HD 3000-level graphics card (64 MB).

Tips: How to Squeeze Out the Most FPS

To get the games from our list running as smoothly as possible, use the following recommendations:

  1. Update your graphics drivers. Even for integrated Intel HD solutions, newer software versions can give a performance boost.
  2. Lower your screen resolution. Switching from 1080p to 1280x720 (720p) is the fastest way to raise FPS by 1.5–2x.
  3. Close unnecessary processes. Before launching, close browsers, Discord, and background messengers that "eat up" RAM.
  4. Adjust your power settings. In Windows settings (especially on laptops), choose the "High performance" mode.
  5. Clean up your system. Regularly delete temporary files and remove unnecessary programs from startup.

FTL: Faster Than Light

FTL: Faster Than Light is a spaceship-management roguelike where every jump forces hard calls: route risk, crew triage, and juggling power between shields, weapons, and engines under enemy fire. Runs are short, randomized, and brutally punishing until the systems click — and then you're hooked for hundreds of hours. The minimalist 2D visuals run flawlessly on literally any integrated graphics, and the game weighs under 200 MB.

Papers, Please

Papers, Please casts you as a border-checkpoint inspector in a fictional dystopian state, where you scrutinize documents, spot forgeries, and decide who to let through — knowing your family's survival depends on your paycheck. A grim, original "dystopian document thriller" with surprising moral weight. It's tiny, runs on anything, and holds overwhelmingly positive reviews on Steam.

Cult of the Lamb

Cult of the Lamb mixes a roguelike dungeon crawler with a base-building cult simulator: you clear randomized levels of enemies, then return home to recruit followers, build your settlement, and keep the faith. Charming hand-drawn art, dark humor, and constant free updates make it one of the best indie games of recent years. The stylized visuals keep hardware demands modest.
