Best Short Games to Enjoy Over a Few Evenings
Fazil Dzhyndzholiia
Many gamers value long games the most — the kind packed with dozens, if not hundreds, of hours of content. That’s a perfectly reasonable preference. Still, it’s worth giving credit to short games you can finish in just a couple of evenings, or even in a single sitting: such titles make a great alternative to watching a movie or series. In this list, we’ve collected the best games that, on average, can be completed in 2–9 hours.
Short story-driven blockbusters and action-adventures
Marvel's Spider‑Man: Miles Morales
- Year: 2020;
- Platforms: PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, PC;
- Co-op: no.
A fully-fledged standalone entry in the Marvel’s Spider-Man series, this game focuses on the rise of Miles Morales as one of New York's new protectors. A visually stunning, big-budget blockbuster with a pace that mirrors Hollywood superhero movies — Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales charges toward the finish line with barely a pause. If you skip side content, expect around 7 hours of gameplay.

Resident Evil 3
- Year: 2020;
- Platforms: PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch (cloud version);
- Co-op: no.
Not the most successful remake of a classic, but in isolation — a pretty solid game. The new Resident Evil 3 is a fast-paced, visually engaging action title with ever-changing scenarios and locations, so boredom isn’t an issue. It feels like a straightforward action movie from the late ’80s or early ’90s — and that’s not a flaw, but rather a compliment.
Metroid Dread
- Year: 2021;
- Platform: Nintendo Switch;
- Co-op: no.
The long-awaited return of a legendary series after a hiatus spanning decades. Metroid Dread is a rare example of a AAA platformer — one that impresses not just with its gameplay and level design, but also with its high production values, unusual for the genre. That polish is especially evident in the environments and cinematic cutscenes.
Shadow of the Colossus
- Year: 2018;
- Platform: PlayStation 4;
- Co-op: no.
A game you can finish in an evening or two — but it will stay with you for years. Shadow of the Colossus is a true work of art: melancholic, hauntingly beautiful, and deeply atmospheric. The 2018 remake is also visually stunning in every sense.
Uncharted: The Lost Legacy
- Year: 2017;
- Platforms: PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, PC (PS5 and PC — included in the Legacy of Thieves Collection);
- Co-op: no.
Like the aforementioned Miles Morales, Uncharted: The Lost Legacy walks the line between DLC and a full game. This spin-off of the legendary series is perfectly balanced in terms of length and quality: it’s compact, yet packed with content. In fact, some players even consider it the best entry in the series.
Titanfall 2
- Year: 2016;
- Platforms: PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One;
- Co-op: no (features a single-player campaign and online multiplayer).
The single-player campaign in Titanfall 2 is one of the most gripping in any shooter — and that’s in a game primarily designed as a multiplayer experience. Still, many of the developers had worked on Call of Duty, and they certainly knew how to craft short but memorable solo campaigns.

A Way Out

- Co-op: yes (local and online)
A great game to enjoy with a friend. A Way Out is a co-op adventure about a prison break where teamwork is key to pulling off a daring escape. And once you're out, there are still plenty of shared challenges ahead — including chases, shootouts, and major narrative choices.
Short horror games
Resident Evil 7: Biohazard
- Year: 2017;
- Platforms: PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch (cloud version), iOS, macOS;
- Co-op: no.
Another Resident Evil game — and arguably the scariest one in the series. Resident Evil 7: Biohazard was so terrifying that even the developers later admitted they may have gone a bit overboard. Still, it’s a fantastic stress test for your nerves — and one you can realistically complete in a single night.
Little Nightmares
- Year: 2017;
- Platforms: PlayStation 4, Windows (PC), Xbox One, Nintendo Switch;
- Co-op: no.
If you’re looking for an indie game not to relax, but to get a little nervous, check out Little Nightmares. It’s a short horror title with mesmerizing art direction and an intriguing concept: you play as a tiny figure in a grotesque world full of monstrous giants eager to catch and devour you. There are no weapons — you'll have to rely on stealth and quick feet.
DREDGE
- Year: 2023;
- Platforms: PC, Mac, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch;
- Co-op: no.
A fishing simulator with horror elements. DREDGE is a game of contrasts: by day, exploring the waters of a mysterious archipelago is peaceful and meditative; by night, when sea monsters emerge, the zen quickly gives way to tension and terror.
Carrion
- Year: 2020;
- Platforms: PC, macOS, Linux, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, Android, iOS;
- Co-op: no.
A short but quite unique 2D game where you don’t play the hero — you are the monster. In Carrion, you control a sentient, flesh-devouring blob escaping from a secret lab: devouring scientists and guards, growing in size, and unlocking new abilities.
Small indie hits and unusual conceptual games
A Short Hike
- Year: 2019;
- Platforms: PC, macOS, Linux, Nintendo Switch;
- Co-op: no.
A cozy game set in a small open world. In A Short Hike, players freely explore an island, discover hidden spots, search for secrets, and complete simple side tasks. It’s all about the warm, lighthearted atmosphere and the spirit of childhood adventure, where every corner holds the promise of something delightful.
Portal 2
- Year: 2011;
- Platforms: PC, Mac, Linux, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360;
- Co-op: yes (local and online, up to 2 players).
One of Valve’s most highly acclaimed masterpieces — and deservedly so. Portal 2 hooks players with clever puzzles, distinct visual style, memorable characters, and great humor. Best of all, it’s a breeze to play through, so none of its elements ever overstay their welcome.
The Stanley Parable: Ultra Deluxe
- Year: 2022;
- Platforms: PC, Mac, Linux, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S;
- Co-op: no.
An incredibly witty game built entirely around breaking the fourth wall. The Stanley Parable: Ultra Deluxe is a satire of the video game format itself — poking fun at tropes like non-linearity and player choice in virtual adventures.
Firewatch
- Year: 2016;
- Platforms: PC, Mac, Linux, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch;
- Co-op: no.
A first-person narrative drama with zero combat — yet still engaging thanks to its atmosphere and dialogue. In Firewatch, you play as a forest lookout. Initially, you’re just patrolling the area, watching sunsets, and preventing fires, but gradually you begin noticing strange things — signs that someone might be watching you.
Journey
- Year: 2012;
- Platforms: PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, PC, iOS;
- Co-op: yes (online, up to 2 players).
Few games embody minimalism as well as Journey. In a traditional sense, it barely has gameplay — there’s no fighting or even puzzles. It’s just a trek through the desert toward a mountain, with a few light obstacles. Yet thanks to the music and stunning art direction, Journey becomes a meditative animated film of sorts — perfect for winding down after a stressful day.
SUPERHOT
- Year: 2016;
- Platforms: PC, macOS, Linux, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch;
- Co-op: no (single-player only).
An indie shooter with a brilliant twist: in SUPERHOT, time only moves when you do. It’s not a traditional FPS, but more of a puzzle with tactical elements, where every step requires careful consideration.
Stray
- Year: 2022;
- Platforms: PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5;
- Co-op: no.
A touching story about an orange cat exploring a cyberpunk city. You’ll solve light puzzles and hide from security drones. Despite its compact size and seemingly simple premise, Stray has plenty of thematic depth and subtle storytelling.
Papers, Please
- Year: 2013;
- Platforms: PC, macOS, Linux, iOS;
- Co-op: no.
An unusual border inspector simulator set in a fictional totalitarian country. Papers, Please manages to pose numerous difficult moral dilemmas over just a few hours — prompting reflection on compassion, duty, and personal responsibility.
Cult racing games
Mario Kart World
- Year: 2025;
- Platform: Nintendo Switch 2;
- Co-op: yes (local and online, up to 24 players).
Currently the flagship exclusive for Nintendo Switch 2. The beauty of Mario Kart World is that while you could theoretically play it endlessly — especially if you’re into online competitions — it also works great as a short one-evening experience: you can see all the Grand Prix tracks in about 3 hours. Think of it as a visit to an amusement park — only without leaving the comfort of your house.
