The jRPG subgenre typically refers to role-playing games developed in Japan. This isn't always true, as similar projects are also made in other countries. They have distinct characteristics—a well-thought-out plot with lengthy cutscenes, movement across a global map, and battles in local open worlds. The player often controls not just one character, but a whole group of heroes. Typically, we don't have the option to customize the protagonist's appearance; they are pre-designed by artists. The first jRPG is considered to be Dragon Slayer from 1984. Our article highlights the best examples of this genre.
Final Fantasy 7 Remake
- Release year: 2020;
- Platforms: PC, PlayStation 4, PS5, Xbox Series, Nintendo Switch 2;
- Co-op: No.
The Final Fantasy series includes dozens of games of varying quality. We've chosen the seventh installment as the best in many respects. Unfortunately, it was released in 1997 and has become outdated over the years. Therefore, it's better to check out the remake today.
The game deserves praise for its good story, detailed world, and wonderful characters, each of whom is unforgettable. Furthermore, the remake offers excellent action gameplay. Moreover, the battle can be paused tactically and orders can be given to allies.

It's worth noting that Remake is only the first chapter of a large-scale remaster of Final Fantasy 7. The second episode is called Rebirth (we have a review of it on our website), and the third is still in development at the time of writing.
The original Final Fantasy 7 or its remake?
Persona 5
- Release year: 2016;
- Platforms: PC, PS3, PlayStation 4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series, Nintendo Switch;
- Co-op: no.
This game's plot and visuals are reminiscent of a modern anime series. A group of teenagers attend high school and don't stand out from their peers. However, in a parallel world, they emerge as brave warriors who fight powerful enemies. These two universes influence each other, making the story truly engaging. Battles in Persona 5 are played in the genre's typical turn-based mode, where you can defeat enemies with simple attacks and use special abilities.

We recommend purchasing the Royal Edition of the game, which is available on all current platforms.
Ni no Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch
- Release year: 2010;
- Platforms: PC, PlayStation 3, PS4, Xbox One, Xbox Series, Nintendo Switch;
- Co-op: no.
If Persona 5 can be considered an interactive anime series, then Ni no Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch is the video game equivalent of Hayao Miyazaki's feature-length animated films. This touching adventure follows a boy traveling to a parallel world to meet his estranged mother. Beautiful visuals and a captivating soundtrack are combined with an engaging combat system. It features turn-based battles and real-time action. To defeat enemies, you need to use Pokémon-inspired summons called familiars.
