- The film was originally planned to be much more provocative. For example, one of the hosts was supposed to be possessed by a demon, while another's head was supposed to catch fire live on air. Bruce wanted to give Susan Ortega, a character named Susan, sexual pleasure without her consent;

- The request to repeat the line about the parents' death was not in the script. Jim Carrey approached actor Liam Aiken, who plays Klaus, to re-record the line. But the line suited Count Olaf's character perfectly, so it was left in the final edit.
- Paramount initially planned to turn A Series of Unfortunate Events into a kind of answer to Warner Bros.' Harry Potter. However, the idea didn't work out, as the film flopped at the box office.
