VGTimes Interview with the Developers of We Were Here Tomorrow — Two-Player Puzzles in a Retrofuturistic Setting
We Were Here Tomorrow is a cooperative puzzle game in which 2 players must overcome a variety of challenges. To progress, they need to coordinate their actions over voice chat and make decisions together. We spoke with one of the developers to get the full picture.
Our questions were answered by Jess de Troije, a graphic designer and 2D artist at Total Mayhem Games, the studio developing We Were Here Tomorrow.
VGTimes: Tell us about the game, its setting, lore, and gameplay—everything we need to know.
Jess de Troije: We Were Here Tomorrow is the sixth installment in our series of cooperative puzzle games for 2 players. It is similar to an escape room, where participants must solve puzzles to find their way out. Here, however, the players are separated. They need to work together, solve puzzles, and communicate over walkie-talkies to escape the location and complete the game.
VGTimes: Why should players pay attention to We Were Here Tomorrow? Tell us about the project's key features.
Jess de Troije: Players will have to constantly discuss puzzle solutions with each other. It is fun, but it can feel a little unusual at first. If your partner quickly understands what to do next, they are a pleasure to work with. We Were Here Tomorrow also has a completely new visual style compared with the previous installments. We usually work with fantasy settings, but this time we decided to make a science-fiction game with retro elements and a vibrant color palette.
VGTimes: Where does We Were Here Tomorrow take place?
Jess de Troije: The game is set in a research facility operated by the Norček corporation, and we play as professors. You will have to uncover what was really happening inside its laboratories.
VGTimes: Are we dealing with some kind of evil corporation?
Jess de Troije: Possibly. But it might also be a good corporation trying to save the world.
VGTimes: Was We Were Here Tomorrow made with Unity?
Jess de Troije: Yes, we develop our games with Unity.
VGTimes: How long have you been developing games?
Jess de Troije: Our company has been around for more than 10 years. The first game was a student project created as part of a university assignment at Rotterdam University. It was released in 2017, and you can download it from Steam completely free of charge if you would like to try it. Following the success of the first We Were Here, its 6 student developers decided to join forces and establish their own studio. Now, 10 years later, we are working on the sixth game in the series.
VGTimes: How many people are currently on the team?
Jess de Troije: Our studio employs between 45 and 50 people.
VGTimes: Do they all work in one location, or are some of them outsourced?
Jess de Troije: No, everyone is based in Rotterdam.
VGTimes: When will We Were Here Tomorrow be released?
Jess de Troije: In October 2026, but I cannot reveal the exact date yet.
VGTimes: Thank you for the interview, and good luck with the game!
Jess de Troije: Thank you!
We Were Here Tomorrow looks like a good way to spend time solving puzzles with a friend or significant other. The game is worth keeping an eye on if you enjoyed Unravel Two, Never Alone, or the earlier installments in the We Were Here series.
What makes you most want to try We Were Here Tomorrow?
