Let me start with the fact that I had some money lying around in my wallet and I decided to buy something cheap. My gaze fell on Welcome to Deponia (part 1, but at that time I had no idea that there were 2 more parts). I started to remember where I heard about her, but I couldn’t remember much, I only remembered that she was “..cheerful...” and “..unusual...”. But believe me, I haven’t had such pleasure from a game for a very long time. So what? Did you go for a review?
The game is an indie quest in cartoon style, where the main character is our young mechanic, and most importantly, the Deponian Rufus. He lives on a sparsely inhabited planet called Deponia, where all there is is: “Garbage. Garbage. Garbage. Oh, a clean stream and gardens of Eden... but no, that’s also garbage” (c) Rufus. Because of his “invaluable” mind, he wants to escape from Deponia, inventing more and more incredible and one hundred percent escape plans (but, judging by the number of his drawings, they are not very successful). We begin the game with the fact that he again has a new plan for an “incredible escape” and we, guiding Rufus, help him in translating it into reality...
This is the beginning of the game. I think you will say something like “So what? the guy was just about to get off the planet that was pissing him off. So why play this? To which I will answer you: “What if we add to the above mentioned beginning: an incredibly interesting plot, good humor and jokes in almost every line, inexplicable new ideas of Rufus, a secret conspiracy, a love branch and, of course, the main villain?” Yes, this is exactly what Welcome to Deponia looks like, the constant delivery of jokes and Rufus’ machinations won’t even give you a break from laughing, a lot of characters with whom you can interact, really difficult (and therefore interesting!) puzzles, because you never know what you need aviation energy inverter or 2 cats in your pocket! And the cartoonish art only adds more comedy and atmosphere to the game.
+ : A huge amount of humor
Atmospheric
Incredible plot
Colorful characters
A feeling of unobtrusive “De jà vu”
- : Except that which is only 3 parts.
Some of the "achievement" puzzles were really hard :)
To sum it up, I want to say that after going through all the parts I was simply upset... but that's only because I can't complete it yet once again “like the first time” and the fact that I had to say goodbye to the heroes of the game Deponia, who were each so unique that it cannot be conveyed. One of the best games of recent times, a good game with a lot of humor, twists of events, interesting dialogues and colorful characters, despite the fact that it is presented as an indie quest - this is what my conclusion looks like.
