In its September 2026 threat intelligence report, Anthropic said it reviewed Claude misuse spanning December 2025 through August 2026 and found five biological-misuse case studies tied to attempts to use the model in biological weapons development.
The company said the cases involved Claude Haiku, Claude Sonnet, and Claude Opus. In one example, Claude was used to draft a grant request for gain-of-function research on the chikungunya virus, with the proposal aimed at increasing transmissibility and immune evasion. Anthropic said the research was affiliated with a military research institute, which made the case especially concerning, and it also flagged gain-of-function work on bird flu. -
