Croatian studio Croteam started with a football simulator for Amega, their first game Football Glory. The game earned high marks from critics. The second one didn't work out so well. But in 2001, the Croats released a game that could be called a direct successor to DOOM. By that time, everyone was already accustomed to shooters with a plot. And Serious Sam deliberately avoided excess fluff. It was a shooter whose whole essence was action and constant brutal combat. Monsters on the level were bombarded with entire divisions. The world, which had time to digest half-life, deus ex and two parts of thief, shuddered from such old-fashioned hardcore.
