Thief
Probably one of the most controversial games. Even now, as I sit down to write this review, I'm still not sure about the final rating.
It's very important to note that I haven't played the previous parts. And my playthrough was on the PC version, with keyboard and mouse. I played on the highest difficulty, where you can't knock out civilians (*to my utmost surprise, drugging prostitutes with opium also counts as knocking out civilians, kudos to the developers' tolerance).
The game was met rather coolly. And it's not surprising, the beginning of 2014 was an extremely poor choice for a series reboot. Especially since 2013 gave us The Last of Us, GTA5, and Bioshock Infinite. Dead Space successfully failed, thanks to its attempt to transform from Resident Evil to Uncharted, and the last march of Xbox with PS3.
After all the magnificence released in 2013, it's not surprising that Thief fell.
The blame lies with high expectations and criticism of Rhianna Pratchett. Thanks to Longvinov, it was once fashionable to criticize her just as much as to express hatred for the annually released CoD.
Gameplay
Probably the best part of the game. It has endured so much criticism and comparisons with Dishonored that it's hard to convey. But the stealth in Thief, I dare say, is much more thought out. Thief needs to be played stealthily. While Dishonored can be, its dynamic combat and idiotic observation mechanics often tip the scales towards violence.
Pleases
Stealth mechanics
Multi-level locations
Multiple ways to complete missions
Hand and movement animations (lockpicking is excellently done)
Puzzles
The diversity of chapters, people who "stick to their line" will have a hard time.
The player is required to make diverse decisions
Disappoints
Descending with X (as if you can't use the crouch key for descending) and needing a separate button for 2-3 situations in the game.
It might have been reasonable to add the ability to immediately grab and carry away after knocking out guards. Like the garrote in Blood Money.
In some places, it's practically impossible to "click" with the club on one.
Blind ghouls are not alerted=(
Graphics
They are decent.
The atmosphere of "It's always night and raining here." Max Payne in a snowy night city approves.
I would have liked more physics, like jumping on a box and breaking it. As Freeman bequeathed.
Plot
It exists just enough to keep you moving forward.
The main thing to understand is that Thief is an action game, not a narrative one.
If the story turned out to be quite average. And the talks about gruel give you a headache. Then sometimes, running across rooftops, you can hear interesting hints. However, the criminal amount of dialogues and unhealthy love for trans people can be unpleasantly surprising.
Controls
Since I played stealthily, they are excellent. The combat is debatable, but ideally, you shouldn't use it. You are a thief, not a brawler in a pub.
Music
Sometimes very good. But occasionally, some modern electronic motifs knock you out of the atmosphere. Overall, the music is quite strong, immersing you in the atmosphere, but nothing extraordinary.
Conclusion
Just sit down and play a good game. There are very few worthy stealth solutions on the market. Thief will give you interesting puzzles, decent stealth, and intriguing characters. It's a pity that the characters are much more colorful than the story itself.
