In a recent episode of The Town podcast, acclaimed filmmaker Denis Villeneuve, known for Blade Runner 2049 and Dune, explained why he isn't interested in creating a film within the Star Wars universe.
During the podcast, Villeneuve shared that he first saw Star Wars when he was ten years old. It was A New Hope, which, according to him, immediately captivated his young mind and sparked an obsession with the story.
He added that he watched The Empire Strikes Back countless times, but his impressions were marred by the final part of the original trilogy.
Villeneuve recounted that as a teenager, he even wanted to travel with a friend to confront George Lucas and express his anger.
I was 15 years old, and my best friend and I wanted to take a cab and go to L.A. and talk to George Lucas — we were so angry! Still today, the Ewoks. It turned out to be a comedy for kids. Star Wars became crystallized in its own mythology, very dogmatic. It seemed like a recipe, no more surprises. So I'm not dreaming to do a Star Wars because it feels like code is very codified.
In the podcast, Villeneuve was also asked if he would be interested in making a «Star Trek» film, but the director responded that he has never been a fan of the franchise.
