The announcement of the Ghost of Tsushima sequel was met with a mixed reception from players. Many gamers did not like Sucker Punch's decision regarding the female protagonist.

Recall that the main character of Ghost of Yotei will be a girl named Atsu, who will take the place of the Ghost hundreds of years after Jin Sakai. To voice her and create a model, the studio invited actress Erika Ishii, familiar to many from her work on Valkyrie in Apex Legends. However, not all players approved of the change of the protagonist from a man to a woman, and some criticized the «inclusive» views of the performer herself. The latter even closed her account after the announcement at State of Play.

Amid the controversy surrounding Ghost of Yotei, former PlayStation CEO Shawn Layden also spoke out:

It's a game. An entertainment. A story a team of creators believes in. They want to make this. It's a game. If you don't like it, don't buy it. In fact, why not make the game you want yourself?
— Shawn Layden

Earlier, the developers at Sucker Punch explained why they decided to abandon the continuation of Jin Sakai's story in the sequel. Ghost of Yotei is scheduled for release in 2025 for PS5.
