Insider reveals how Assassin's Creed: Shadows ended up with so many historical inaccuracies and if Yasuke's portrayal will change
Last week, Ubisoft announced the postponement of Assassin's Creed: Shadows from November 15 to February 14. Reliable insider Tom Henderson questioned company employees about the reasons behind this decision.
For the developers, the need to delay the game was «expected and desperately needed.“ Employees had been pleading for months to postpone the release, but their calls went unheeded;
Everything changed with the release of Star Wars Outlaws. According to Tom Henderson, the game sold one million copies in its first month, and Ubisoft officially acknowledged that the game's results were weaker than expected;
Poor sales forced management to delay Assassin's Creed: Shadows and also to revise their game release policy — now games will be released on Steam simultaneously with the global release;
When asked why Shadows was postponed, Henderson responds: ”It's a complicated question without a single answer, but it boils down to a strict development timeline, polishing, and addressing the Japanese community's cultural and historical accuracy concerns»;
Yasuke, of course, will not be removed, but sources revealed that the team is actively working on correcting historical and cultural inaccuracies. In particular, changes will affect parts of the story and the portrayal of the black samurai, architectural details, and overall historical authenticity;
The authenticity issues arose because, for some reason, history experts were brought in much later, as often happens with projects of this scale. Additionally, there were disagreements between teams, and when it came to asset approval, developers overlooked some points to meet the deadline;
The studio is also actively working on polishing the game and changing some gameplay mechanics.
Earlier, Ubisoft stated that Assassin's Creed: Shadows would be a worthy competitor to Ghost of Yotei. Recall that the sequel to Ghost of Tsushima is also set to release in 2025.
