Enshrouded Crashes on Startup or Black Screen — What to Do?

Enshrouded is quite a demanding game, so make sure your system meets the minimum system requirements. If it doesn't, you will likely be able to launch the game, but creating a world may not be possible.

Usually, it comes down to a lack of RAM. You can try increasing the page file size in the system to work around the problem:

  • Open System — About
  • Click Advanced system settings
  • In the Advanced tab, click Performance
  • Go to the Advanced tab again and in the Virtual memory section, click Change
  • Select the drive (preferably SSD) and set the values to 8048 and 16096
  • Click Apply and OK
  • Restart your PC

If the problem persists, you will need to upgrade your computer components to run Enshrouded. Note that the game is in early access, so various bugs and crashes occur. The gaming community notes the black screen issue as one of the frequently appearing problems on the first launch. We've gathered all effective ways to fix it.

Disable Scaling in NVIDIA Control Panel

If you are using an NVIDIA graphics card, you can try disabling scaling:

  • Open the NVIDIA Control Panel, then go to the Adjust desktop size and position section on the left panel
  • Select No scaling, then make sure the checkbox Override the scaling mode set by games and programs is checked
  • Click Apply, restart your computer, and check if Enshrouded launches

Run Enshrouded as Administrator

In most cases, simply running the game as an administrator helps resolve the launch and black screen issues. To do this, follow these steps:

  • Open Steam and go to the library
  • Right-click on Enshrouded, select Properties — Installed Files — Browse
  • Right-click on the executable file enshrouded.exe — Run as administrator

For the Game Pass version on PC, simply find the game in the Start menu, right-click on it, and select Run as administrator.

Disable or Adjust Overclocking Settings

Disable overclocking of your GPU, CPU, or RAM. Then launch Enshrouded to check if the black screen issue disappears. If disabling overclocking helps, you may need to adjust the overclocking settings or completely disable them. However, keep in mind that future updates to Enshrouded may affect stability, so stay updated on any changes.

Use FSR or DLSS

If you managed to launch Enshrouded but experience freezes during gameplay, enable scaling mode in the graphics settings. Also, we recommend lowering the graphics settings to the minimum, then gradually increasing them until you find the optimal setting.

Verify Game Files Integrity

The last tip to help fix crashes and black screen in Enshrouded is to verify the integrity of the game files in Steam.

  • Launch Steam and open the library
  • Find Enshrouded, right-click and select Properties
  • Go to the Local Files tab and click Verify integrity of game files

Not Enough System Memory Available Error When Launching Enshrouded

This issue occurs for users with 16 GB or less of RAM. The game should launch, but many players report that they cannot enter Enshrouded when this error occurs. If you have already increased the page file size as we advised in previous sections but still encounter this issue, you can use the following method:

  • Launch Steam
  • Find Enshrouded in the library, right-click and select Properties
  • In the General tab, find the launch options window
  • Enter the following line without quotes --disable-ram-check
  • Launch the game

Enshrouded Game Creation Failed Error — Solution

One of the common issues in Enshrouded is the Game Creation Failed Error. It is usually related to server access issues. Solutions often depend on actions from the host, but there are a number of other fixes as well.

Restart the Steam Launcher

First of all, we recommend restarting the Steam client. This will not only terminate the game process but also allow the entire Steam system to reboot and, if available, download updates.

Run the Game as Administrator

A simple action like running as an administrator can help fix the server connection error. In the previous section, we already explained how to do this.

Check Enshrouded Server Status

Follow the official Enshrouded social media accounts to stay updated on the latest game news and get information on possible causes of issues with its launch. In the official Enshrouded Discord channel, you can promptly receive notifications about any discovered problems related to both the game and server status.

Restart Your Computer and Router

If the steps taken to troubleshoot the issues did not yield results, it might be due to your internet connection. We recommend trying to restart your computer and router, which may help fix the error and allow you to return to the game in multiplayer mode.

Check Server Settings

If you are trying to connect to a dedicated server, make sure the host has configured everything correctly. Setting up a dedicated server can require significant effort, so ask the server administrator to check the configuration files and ensure everything is functioning properly. This will ensure seamless connectivity for both the administrator and other server users.

Simplify the Server Password

Some players have reported that the error disappears when using a simplified password. Complex passwords with special characters can often lead to issues, so it is initially recommended to choose a simple password.

Join Server Crashing Error MiniDump in Enshrouded — What to Do?

The MiniDump error occurred for a huge number of players until recently, but the developers released a patch that fixes the issue. If you have downloaded the updates but still encounter this problem, try the following actions:

  • Join a Friend: Right-click on your friend's name in the Steam friends list and select Join Game.
  • Verify Game Files: Use the game file integrity verification feature to detect and fix corrupted files.
  • Check Internet Connection: Ensure the stability of your internet connection, as an unstable connection can lead to connection issues.
  • Check Server Password and Configuration: Make sure the password and server settings are entered correctly.
  • Adjust Firewall and Antivirus Settings: We recommend adding Enshrouded and the server software to the firewall and antivirus exclusion list.
  • Check Server Mod Compatibility: If you are using mods, make sure they are installed on your client as well and are compatible with the server.
  • Lower Graphics Settings: Reducing the graphics settings in the game will decrease the load on the system.

World Save Error in Enshrouded — How to Fix?

First of all, we recommend checking for game updates. Since Enshrouded is in early access, developers release various small fixes aimed at improving the project and eliminating various issues. Additionally, make sure the latest system updates are also installed.

Select the Correct Save File

Make sure the correct save file is selected for Enshrouded. Sometimes, the game may automatically load an older save file instead of the latest one. To fix this situation, you will need to manually find and activate the necessary save file.

  • Launch Enshrouded and go to the main menu
  • Select Play, then choose Closed, Host, or Join
  • At this stage, the game will show you a list of existing worlds. Check the date and time of each world and select the most recent one
  • Click Load and check if your game world is saved correctly

Use the Flame Altar

The next step is to use the Flame Altar, a technological device available after reaching the third level. The Flame Altar allows you to teleport to various places and save your game world. To use it, you need to perform certain actions:

  • Create a Flame Altar and place it on your base (you can also find it in the starting area)
  • Interact with the Flame Altar and teleport to any location, but not too far from your base
  • Wait for the teleportation to complete, then interact with the Flame Altar again. Select the option Return to base.
  • Check if the game world has been saved

What to Do if Your Character Gets Stuck in Textures?

Often, your character will get stuck in various textures. For example, if you climbed into a locked basement of a ruined house but cannot get out or if your inventory lacks a pickaxe, use the following tips:

  • Find and break wooden obstacles. This is the simplest advice that will help you in most cases. However, sometimes doors or wooden partitions just won't break. In this case, you'll have to use the following recommendations.
  • Dig your way out. If you have a pickaxe in your inventory, you can always dig your way out. Just make sure your tool's condition is sufficient.
  • Use explosives. Early in the game, you will encounter marauders who have grenades and other explosives in their pockets. These work well on building walls and soil, so it's worth a try.
  • Use fast travel. The last way to get out of textures is to teleport to the Flame Altar or a previously unlocked spire. If you've wandered far enough, it might be disappointing to lose so much exploration experience. However, it's better than being stuck in textures.

How to Improve FPS on Low-End PCs

If you want to try out the new game on low-end hardware, be prepared to face some difficulties. If your computer doesn't meet even the minimum system requirements, you probably won't be able to play. However, if the minimum requirements are met, we have prepared a list of recommendations to improve Enshrouded's performance.

Update Graphics Drivers

First, update your graphics adapter driver, as this will help eliminate various issues during gameplay. You can do this using applications GeForce Experience (for NVIDIA cards) and AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition (for AMD cards). You can also download and install drivers from the official manufacturer websites:

It will also be helpful to completely remove the outdated driver from your PC and perform a clean installation.

Use Fullscreen Mode

In the game, you can use several display modes, but we recommend sticking to fullscreen mode. In this case, Enshrouded will utilize the maximum amount of system resources, which will be beneficial for improving performance.

Run the Game as Administrator

To avoid errors and issues related to user account control, you need to run Enshrouded as an administrator. To do this, go to the game's root folder, find the executable file enshrouded.exe, right-click and select Run as administrator. You can set this function as default in the file properties.

Close Background Programs and Processes

To save system resources before launching Enshrouded, it is recommended to close all third-party programs and terminate background processes. To do this:

  • Press the Ctrl+Shift+Esc key combination
  • Go to the Processes tab
  • Track tasks that consume most of the system resources
  • Terminate the necessary processes
  • Launch the game

Adjust Power Settings

If your system is running in balanced power mode, the hardware is not using its full potential. It is recommended to set the high-performance mode, but in this case, the system will consume more power:

  • In the Windows search, type Power
  • In the opened window, select High performance
  • Save changes and restart the PC
