TOP-8 horror films of recent years — Pennywise, zombies, a film from the creator of Saw and many others
The horror genre is going through a rough patch, but there are still some films that can tickle the nerves of viewers. We have selected the 10 best horror films of the last 5 years. However, we warn you — the creepy cannibal clown, Korean zombies, ghosts and cultists from this top can deprive you of sleep for a long time.
«Train to Busan»
Let's start the list with a zombie horror by South Korean director Yeon Sang-ho. Don't be confused by the banal plot about another virus that turns people into flesh-eating undead. Of course, we've seen a lot of similar films, but «Train to Busan» deservedly made it into our top. The film keeps you in suspense until the very credits
The key feature of the horror is the setting. All the characters are on a train, and they simply have nowhere to run. «Train to Busan» is a breath of fresh air for «horror films». The plot here, of course, is not as deep as, for example, in The Last of Us, but nevertheless, it is not without unexpected twists and dramatic moments.
We highly recommend watching it.
«The Conjuring 2»
Let's start the list with a zombie horror by South Korean director Yeon Sang-ho. Don't be confused by the banal plot about another virus that turns people into flesh-eating undead. Of course, we've seen a lot of similar films, but «Train to Busan» got into our top quite deservedly. The film keeps you in suspense until the very credits

«It»
Stephen King is one of the most screened modern writers. The number of films, TV series and short films based on his works has long exceeded a hundred, but not all of them are worth attention. Nevertheless, the horror film «It» is definitely not worth missing. After all, this is the very case when an expensive blockbuster turned out to be really scary.
The evil clown Pennywise has awakened and now he needs to have a snack. The «Circus Performer» loves baby meat: it is the most tender and delicious, and when children are scared half to death, their flesh becomes a real delicacy. However, the «Losers Club», which the monster coveted, turned out to be no slouch and fought back the monster.
The film not only skillfully scares, but also periodically amuses. This allows viewers to take a breather after the intense scenes. It is the masterful balance of adventure atmosphere with blood-curdling moments that makes «It» one of the best horror films of recent years.
«mother!»
«mother!» is a film by cult director Darren Aronofsky, who has «Noah», «Black Swan» and «Requiem for a Dream» under his belt. It is difficult to define the genre of the film. On the one hand, it is a tense thriller, on the other hand, it is a pure-blooded art-house film. One thing is for sure — this is a very scary film, despite the fact that there are practically no screamers here.
The plot of the film may seem strange, but this is the very case when after watching it is worth thinking carefully about everything you saw and trying to find a hidden meaning in some scenes. Everything is important here — you can't lose sight of even the little things. Some people think that this is just a pretentious film filled with the director's graphomania. Maybe so. But «mother!» makes you think. Not every horror can boast of this.
«The House That Jack Built»
Another film filled with metaphors and double meanings. Director Lars von Trier has always been a controversial creator. His works are loved and hated by millions of critics and viewers around the world. But it's not just about a strong plot or incredible acting. As with «Mama!» the film will make you think about von Trier's work for many hours after watching.
For some, «The House That Jack Built» will be an ordinary average thriller. Some will see here the author's reading of the Bible, and some will see creative torment and almost an autobiography of the director. The fact that a seemingly ordinary story about a maniac is perceived differently by each person makes this film so cool.
«A Quiet Place»
Let's return from the sublime film by Darren Aronofsky to classic horror. «A Quiet Place» is a typical horror film in a post-apocalyptic setting. The planet is filled with blind but dangerous monsters, because of which people have to learn to live in a completely new world. Here you can't make unnecessary sounds — the monster can always be somewhere nearby.
The director of the film John Krasinski is known primarily for his comedy roles, for example, he played in the series «The Office». Nevertheless, Krasinski's debut in the horror genre turned out to be successful. Of course, it was not without flaws. Thus, the plot of the film is absurd and even partly delirious, but this does not spoil the impression at all.
«Doctor Sleep»
A film based on the works of Stephen King. This time, the authors invite us to get acquainted with the sequel to the cult «The Shining». The plot centers on the grown-up Danny Torrance, played by Ewan McGregor. The events unfold 31 years after the original film with Jack Nicholson. The boy grew up and, unable to come to terms with what he had experienced, became an alcoholic. However, now he will have to cope not only with the ghosts of the past, but also fight back against a new problem — a mysterious cult that kills children with superpowers.
We are used to the fact that sequels and remakes of cult films almost always turn out mediocre. This time, everything turned out differently. Yes, Doctor Sleep plays up to fans of Stanley Kubrick's original film, sometimes literally quoting scenes from The Shining, but the film doesn't lose its identity and remains an independent work. Exciting, intriguing and frightening.
«Solstice»
Again, a film about a cult, but without any connection to the works of Stephen King. This time, we have a story about a group of American students who came to Sweden to get acquainted with the local culture. The guys arrived in the country at the time when the residents were celebrating the Summer Solstice. As often happens, the believers turned out to be not as simple as it might seem at first glance. Now the young anthropologists have to escape from the clutches of the cultists.
First of all, «Solstice» is remarkable for its setting and atmosphere. We are not shown Satanists killing animals and people in the night forest. On the contrary, summer, sun and a strong touch of Slavic culture. It is because of the unusual location that the film feels fresh. After all, huts, witches and demons are no longer as scary as before. I would like to see more experimental films like this, whose authors really try to bring something new to the genre.
