The lawsuit against Steam has been reclassified as a class action
Wolfire Studios and Dark Catt Studios have successfully achieved class-action status against Steam. U.S. District Judge Jamal N. Whitehead granted their motion.
The legal battle began several years ago. Wolfire Studios (creators of Overgrowth) and Dark Catt Studios (developers of VR projects) accuse Valve of monopolizing the PC games market and imposing an unfair 30% commission on developers for selling games on Steam.
Considering that the lawsuit is now a class action, many other studios dissatisfied with Valve's policies can join the case.
It is reported that the lawsuit pertains to developers who have paid a commission in Steam at least once since January 28, 2017.
If the plaintiffs succeed, Valve will likely have to pay financial compensation to all developers who join the class action lawsuit.
It is worth noting that the antitrust lawsuit was initially filed by Wolfire Studios in 2021. However, the court initially dismissed it, leading the studio to refile the lawsuit against Valve in May 2022.
