Google releases first public beta of Android 16

Google has announced the first public beta version of Android 16, allowing users to install the update via OTA after registering for the testing program. This opens up new possibilities for developers and enthusiasts alike.

One of the standout new features is Live Updates, a new class of notifications similar to iOS's Live Activities. This feature allows users to track the status of ongoing events, such as deliveries or navigation, in real time without opening the app.

Additionally, Android 16 improves app adaptability. On devices with larger screens, the app’s orientation and size limitations will be ignored, allowing apps that aren’t optimized for tablets and foldable devices to automatically stretch across the screens of such gadgets.

There is also improved compatibility with the APV codec, which supports high-quality video and is ideal for professional recording and post-production.

To install Android 16 Beta 1, users need to register for the beta testing program. The version is compatible with Pixel 6, 6 Pro, 6a, 7, 7 Pro, 7a, Tablet, Fold, 8, 8 Pro, 8a, 9, 9 Pro, and 9 Pro XL devices. The fully stable version of Android 16 is expected to be released between April and June 2025.
