Warner Bros. has closed Monolith Production. What to expect from Warner's gaming division in the coming years?

In January 2025, it became known that Warner Bros. Games CEO David Haddad was leaving the company. He led it for 12 years. During his tenure, both successful projects like Hogwarts Legacy and complete failures like Multiversus, Harry Potter: Quidditch Champions and Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League were released. David believed that the Suicide Squad game could bring in multi-billion dollar profits. In the end, it didn't even cover its development costs, and its support ended less than a year after its release. All these failures affected the financial performance.

The decision to abandon the development of dozens of different projects and focus on the main hits was made back in November 2024. It was then announced that the key series of Warner Bros. would be Mortal Kombat, Hogwarts Legacy, DC with a clear emphasis on Batman, as well as Game of Thrones.

According to the famous journalist and writer Jason Schreier, Warner Bros. Games is abandoning games-as-services, so the company's future projects will be made in other genres. The restructuring will also not affect other studios, so there is no need to worry about the fate of Rocksteady, known for the Batman Arkham series.

The first Hogwarts Legacy sold 30 million copies and turned out to be the most successful game of 2023. It is not surprising that representatives of Warner Bros. call the second part the company's main priority. But do not expect a revolution from it — most likely, we will be offered the development of the ideas of the original with new spells, familiar locations and additional activities in the spirit of Quidditch competitions.

The release of Hogwarts Legacy 2 will take place no earlier than 2026. Just by that time, the first seasons of the new Harry Potter series will be released, so the Joanne Rowling universe will be the focus of increased attention. And this will play into the hands of the developers from Avalanche Software.

Since the series was rebooted in 2011, new parts of Mortal Kombat are released once every four years. If this trend does not change, we should expect a new Mortal Kombat no earlier than 2027. Most likely, we will be offered the same game as before, but with a new plot, improved graphics and specific innovations.

After the unsuccessful Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, the developers from Rocksteady want to rehabilitate themselves before the fans. Insiders such as Nick Baker and the already mentioned Jason Schreier say that they are going to release another game about the Dark Knight. It is important to note that we are talking about a new project, and not a remake or remaster of an existing one.

If rumors are to be believed, the game will take place in the universe of the sci-fi animated series "Batman Beyond". In this case, we will have a lot of new sci-fi gadgets, but the basis of the mechanics will remain the same — a combination of hand-to-hand combat and stealth episodes.

Among the stated priorities of Warner Bros. Games is a game based on Game of Thrones. We are not talking about a mobile strategy or a browser RPG, but about a full-fledged project for home consoles and PC. It is known that Warner Bros. is working on it.

Montreal, which released Batman: Arkham Origins and Gotham Knights. There is no other information yet. Even the genre has not been announced — it could be either a large RPG or a modest card game in the spirit of Hearthstone.

According to Jason Schreier, a new LEGO game is currently being worked on. It is being handled by Traveller's Tales, which developed previous projects within this collaboration. The journalist claims that he knows which franchise will be translated into the format of a plastic constructor, but does not want to spoil the surprise for us. The release date is scheduled for 2026.

The Injustice series takes place in the DC universe, so the release of the third part fits into the current policy of Warner Bros. However, we have no specific information about the new fighting game. According to NetherRealm Studios creative director Ed Boon, the team is not against releasing Injustice 3, but its efforts are currently focused on Mortal Kombat.
