Almost all locations are open on the first island (each location has a point for fast travel)

The backpack contains the original equipment for the robber from the add-ons. If you are interested in gear for a warrior/mage, you can buy it from the merchant Rikka Egest (in the location where you appear, to the right of you in the house). This gear will still be relevant until level 10-12.
